It varies by house but yes it helps to have a at least one letter of reference from an alum or local Panhellenic group sent to each house to the attention of the membership recruitment team.
Attach a resume that describes honors, work, volunteering, sports and other activities and interests. Also list any Greek connections in your family, and attach a current picture. This helps the chapter get an advance look at you to recognize you and to give you the very best possible rush.
These days being a legacy is no guarantee of getting in to a chapter, and I doubt that any chapter at Cal will drop you if you do not have a letter of reference, but it does help.
Also be aware that the chapters will look on social media for you so make sure your social media sites reflect what you want them to see about you. Just saying. Hope this helps.

Yes, letters of rec and legacy forms are very helpful! like what was said above, the meaning of these factors vary from house to house but in any case, a girl going through rush will get literal x amount of points in Cal's rush electronic ranking system if she is a legacy or has a letter of recommendation. these can only help you in the long run and if you are a legacy, DEFINITELY provide that information. If you can provide a reference from a friend who is in that chapter at cal or another school, that is very helpful as well!
for example, some chapters have a rule that states that they MUST let a legacy through x amount of days of rush... aka they really aren't allowed to drop a legacy on the first day etc. BUT THIS VARIES FROM CHAPTER TO CHAPTER
if you aren't a legacy or don't have a recommendation letter, don't sweat it. MOST of the girls going through rush don't provide anything and everything usually works out in the long run.

No this is totally NOT true, especially for top houses. First round cuts at top houses are quick and deep and a recommendation or legacy status dont have much impact or do much to help. I would suggest reading the other thread where a number of double and triple legacies got cut round 1 and the legacy paperwork was not even acknowledged by the chapter to the person that wrote the recommendation (shout out of DG and Kappa on poor paperwork management last year!). Hope there is some accountability on the paperwork this year as last years the recruitment adminstration left much to be desired across the board as most houses weren't set up to deal with the volume of paperwork received and there was zero oversight.

I agree that last year the paperwork came in as a down pour and we couldn't get through it all. So, I agree with the other post that said legacies didn't get much respect last year (at our house it was sadly true). Our national gave us tons of grief about it as so many people that wrote rec's complained. Legacy standards are different for each house so go to the national's website and check it out. All I can say is that I hope this years recruitment goes smoother than last year and that pledge class sizes come back to historical levels. Last year's huge pledge class size for most houses was problematic on a whole slew of levels and I'm not sure we can take on another huge class like last year again this year. I really hope we get at least one more new house on campus as huge classes aren't sustainable over the long term.

depends on the house but i think most houses only consider a legacy as a monther or grandmother. at the end of the day, if the house wants you, you will get a bid. legacy matters but youre going to be the one in the chapter, not your family.

still have her write you a letter of recommendation! she would not make you a LEGACY (legacy is a grandmother, mother or sister) but her input would also be respected because she is a member of the chapter. anything helps!

i was considered a legacy at my house with my aunt, so you might have to do a little research on this

Thank you guys! Does having a rec letter from a friend who is a current member (from another school) but isn't alumni make a difference? Or are alumni letters the only ones looked at?
