updated spring cob info
by: SuzI've been hearing that because of the large fall classes that there won't be much Spring COB activity? Is this true? I also heard that DG has had a string of people dropping and is inviting friends of the house to come by to chat about membership? Is this ongoing COB allowed or is COB only allowed during certain defined periods? Also, why is COB so secret. I only heard about the DG situation as my roommate was approached by a friend of hers in the house that she knew from high school. Pretty shady in my opinion.

Our house usually does COB for a good sized Spring pledge class (7-10), but says to expect 3 or 4 spots this year. No Panhellenic numbers yet so could be wrong.
Honestly I rushed as an upper class men and had been to some secret COBs my freshman year and thought it was shady. But in reality, it takes a lot of time and money to do an open, full COB. I don't want to discourage PNMs, but getting almost 150 girls together, coordinated, and recruiting for 3 or 4 bids is not fair for anyone in the situation (recruiting side and PNM side)-- it wastes a lot of time.
It's overall easier and more fair when there's less bids to do casual, invite only COB. It SUCKS of course to think that you're not giving everyone a chance, but upwards of 100-200 girls can show up to an open COB and that's 2-4% chance of getting a bid.

Doesn't Cal have a have a maximum house total of 135 women per each sorority?
FOR EXAMPLE ONLY: This means a sorority starting with 115 members in Fall 2016 and taking 55 additional new members in recruitment would have 170 members after Fall 2016 initiation. Then, that same sorority may lose 25 women to December 2016 graduation as well as 10 women to Spring 2017 overseas student opportunities, leaving the sorority with 135 members and no opportunity to Spring 2017 COB because they are exactly at Cal's 135 women per house total.
I can logically see how a majority of Cal groups are, due to the large Fall 2016 recruitment numbers, either at or over the 135 number meaning those groups cannot COB this Spring.
Some years the numbers just work that way, and thus fewer women are offered Spring COB bids.
Cal's panhellenic might want to consider raising house total, but that won't solve the super-secret shady COB perception.

Pi Phi and Kappa are NOT doing COB. Even tho a few girls dropped, which is normal, for financial reasons, they still have larger pledge classes than ever before. Both have over 50 when they usually have around 40, so now way. Those houses are fit for pledge classes around 40 and there starting pledge classes were too big to begin with. Probably both of there dues are so expensive due to there prime spot on Piedmont and everyone's increasing rent.

I heard about DGs COB, but I know for a fact that's not true about Kappa and Pi Phi. Both have lost 5 people max no upperclassmen, I know for a fact, and already have too large of pledge classes. The reason SK and ChiO had such large pledge classes is because they were smaller houses starting off where as KKG Pi Phi and DG were fuller houses. My friend in chiO said they were begging girls to even move in after bid day because there house wasn't full.

I wish people would stop with the negative stigma of doing Spring COB- so many people get offended if someone assumes their house is doing COB. Why?
I personally like doing Spring COB because I like the excitement and events we do with new mems. My friend rushed as a junior transfer in FFR and was able to pick up a little because of spring COB.
Houses have to do COB for a wide variety of reasons- it does NOT mean that it's not a good house. Likewise, just because you're house does not have to do it doesn't mean it's the best.

Kappa has not been doing COB. Feel free to contact anybody in the house for more details on our recruitment this fall, of the 55 girls who were given bids, 54 were initiated. Don't know why people are spreading these weird stories.
