buckle up ladies! transgender pledge at aopi tufts
by: danaLooks like the National AOPi organization was caught on its back foot with the recent pledging of a transgender female at Tufts. Can't post link here but go to abc.go and look for story id=43442507. Looks like this national can do no right ANYWHERE! Looks like the issue is here and front and center so I hope our well organized and on point Panhel have their ducks lined up to deal with this issue at CAL so we don't get the front page press that Tufts had to deal with recently.

As someone else on these board posts said, the AOII at Tufts is different than the AOII at Berkeley. Tufts had to wait because the nation all-sorority org NPC has responsibilities according to Title Nine, and none of the sororities knew if having a trans join was legal according to Title Nine (they can join, they found out, and Tufts pledged the trans who later dropped out at her own choice).
Equating the two AOII situations only fits at the point of both campuses having an AOII chapter, although Berkeley's AOII is now inactive. Each campus situation was otherwise unique.

I understand your point about the underlying facts of the two situations being totally different. BUT, if you look at the pattern of behavior of AOPi national over the years through many tricky and questionable legal situations a pattern of suspect behavior emerges. If you read some of the local Boston news accounts of the Tufts situation you will see the total frustration of the chapter leadership in dealing with their national and how the national simply was stalling and hoping for the PNM to leave or the situation to somehow disappear. Character issues are sometimes tough to quantify until all the dust settles on a story. But of all the National Panhel members I would be hard pressed to find a shadier group of individuals than those that run AOPi national. Just my opinion. I am a member of another house and we had a tricky/sticky situation with out national. But the national came and addressed us as a house and even when we didn't agree with them we were treated with total respect and courtesy. I am not sure the same can be said of sisters of AOPi that run afoul of their national. If you are interested check out the games that AOPi national played with the poor ladies at their Minnesota chapter! The AOPi leadership is sadly all about money and not morals. I am glad the national is no longer at Cal even though I am heartsick about what happened to the local. It seems the local had a good support network to guide them through the process.

@by: I agree the national was unprepared but it also seems that they weren't ready, willing or able to forge a path forward apart from their NPB brethern. Leadership truly seemed lacking and the communication gaps/games were real and created chaos. Locals need and deserve consistent solid support from nationals and I'm not convinced based on a consistent pattern of behavior that this national is capable of that type of leadership and honest behavior. You know when you get that icky feeling in your gut when you have the sense that someone isnt genuine or honest? That is the icky feeling I got from reading about all these Tufts stories. I had the feeling that the local was trying hard to comply with the national but also respect the PNM involved. I didn't get the sense that the national respected EITHER its local or the prospective PNM. The image I had in my mind was a bunch of people in TN sitting around a conference table collectively wiping the sweat off of their brows and high fiving each other as if they had just dodged a bullet once this issue resolved itself rather than the national proactively and honestly dealing with the issue. Given where this issue is going nationally if the NPC collectively doesn't deal with the issue as a group then it will be a PR nightmare/bad feelings. To the person who said I might be afraid of the press I have to say I have a healthy respect for the press but also have a healthy fear of them when I don't have a coherent story to share.

"We don't even have strong facts to present as to why they should be banned."
Umm. AOPi nationals shut down the entire Cal undergrad org because the Cal alumni org would not give them a 1.5 million dollar property for free. Which of Cal's core principles endorses theft? Or even just supports looking the other way?

We also don't know what if any litigation is pending on the situation between the local and national AOPI. Maybe this is why there has been so little public commentary about the future plans of the organization. We will dig up the public filings on the national once the latest ones are filed and see if there are any disclosures that might help to better understand the situation.
