transgender pnm
by: tuesI am a transgender female and wondered how welcoming the panhel community would be to my participating in Spring COB? Transgender participation in greek life has been controversial at a number of other schools. I would really like to participate but I'm a bit apprehensive. Any thoughts?

As a former Recruitment Counselor for Fall Formal Recruitment I can tell you with certainty that this was discussed when I was trained. We looked up the bylaws of PHC and for our campus it says that to participate you must have "the spirit of a woman." Please don't listen to these dumb answers to your very real and important question. Reach out to the president of PHC and also the VP of Community Development, their information is on the Cal Panhellenic website. They will be good resources for you and I personally know they would love to answer any questions you may have. Know that no matter your gender assigned at birth you are welcome in our community.

I am going to double check with our national but I think there is an outright prohibition. I just read about the AOPi situation at Tufts and that sounded like a bad situation all around. The article I read said that 1/2 the membership resigned after the national intervened to put the situation on hold/stop but only after the individual had pledged. Story is a bit confusing so take a read yourself and see what you think. How do we know that the Cal Panhel policy is not in conflict with individual nationals policies? What seems to have happened at Tufts is that the house and panhel were ok but then the national stepped in and pulled the rug out from under everyone. After reading about the Tufts situation I am not sure it is enough for Panhel to be open so much as the individual houses have to be in compliance with their nationals rules. Do all the houses even know what the rules on this issue are? I for one do not know for my house and this really bothers me.
