advice for (spring) pnms

by:

in my opinion, it's a bad idea to look at this page before going through recruitment. It's hard having an idea in your head about what houses are referred to as "top" and which ones are not. Being in a sorority is about finding a difference and making a difference in our community and through each house's philanthropy. Cal is hard but being in a house is supposed to give you the support and sisterhood you need. I'm not going to say people can't put whatever they want on here, but for the most part, these discussions are negative and only hurt the Greek Community. Finding your fit isn't ending up in a house just because you want the image that comes along with it. Finding your fit is about ending up with girls you genuinely click with best. I get that rush is stressful no matter what year you are, whether you're rushing fall or spring, how many people you know in Greek life, etc. but this page can only make it more stressful. If you're rushing in the spring, I advise you to look no further than this post and to start getting excited about finding a home come 2017! (If you are currently a member of the Greek community, feel free to leave any advice down below for girls looking to rush in the future or even what you wish you knew when you were going through rush or for new members- what you wish you knew as a pledge)

My advice. Run. Don't look back, just run!

Take it all lightly. Figure out where u want to be and give yourself atleast 6 or 7 choices. Make your choice one that's based on fit and not just on ranking. If u don't get into any of your choices drop. Think of it like college. Have many choices but if North Dakota is where you got in and that's not where you want to be then go to the local community college and maybe give it another shot. Don't give it too much power or importance in your life. Greek life is a small part of Cal and you need to put things in perspective. If you get in great! If you don't then maybe it's meant to be. You will make great friends, get a world class education and make a difference either way if you truly want to! You are totally complete in yourself and always remember that. :)

You don't need to rush as soon as you join college. I joined as a sophomore and I'm really glad that I wasn't in a house as a freshman. It gave me an opportunity to get to know life at Cal as in independent. I made friends that I probably wouldn't have made if I had the comfort of my house. Now I have close friends within and outside the Greek system. I feel that my worldview has expanded because of it. So no rush to rush! There is the issue of struggling a bit to get into parties but it really wasn't a big deal for me.

This panhel is the closest thing to the keystone cops imaginable so don't take this process that seriously! My suggestion is to wait until you are a sophomore and have a chance to meet people at different houses. After what happened this year with early hard cuts I would eliminate dg and kappa from your list and keep an open mind about the rest. You will find a house you love if you keep an open mind. Things are being shaken up and many houses this year got great classes.

You should know going in that houses generally only have a few spots to fill during COB so don't be disappointed if you don't get one. Think of it as a chance to meet the sisters before FFR when the houses have a lot more bids to give. and if you don't get one in spring, go back with an open mind in the fall.

I agree to an extent, however I would say don't keep rushing in the hopes of getting into your one specific "dream house" though. Come in with an open mind and actually meet the women of each house you're interested in. If you only get one bid, why not give it a try? If you really don't like it, leave before initiation. I joined a "low tier" house during Spring and I love it here. I was super unsure at first because of what I read on this website (in fact I almost declined my bid). I'm so glad that I didn't though. I would have missed out on such amazing sisters and a great experience. I have never not been able to find a party to go to if I wanted to, and when I want to stay in I have 100+ people to hit up to watch movies and order takeout with me.

Funny story though, every year during FFR there is at least one woman who has gone through recruitment and declined her bid with us. This year there was someone who had gone through two different FFR (and I don't know how many Spring COB events). She was on her third FFR as a junior and she had declined a bid with us twice. We released her immediately, and I hope she ended up somewhere that she could be happy. But don't be that person. If you want to go Greek and get offered a bid somewhere, give it a go. Don't waste two years when you could be in a sorority, going through recruitment over and over because it's not your "top choice".

Honestly the advice here first should be look at the cost, discuss with your family, then come up with a shortlist, then pay close attention when you rush to those houses you shortlisted and be sure to rank your houses according to your shortlist. Your list should factor in fit AND cost. Finally, if you do end up in a house that you don't feel excited about drop out! Why should anyone pay thousands of dollars for something they didn't really want or sign up for something they cannot really afford! It's better to reach out to students with cost information BEFORE students rush so that they're going into it with eyes wide open. You will also have fewer retention problems!
