is panhel broken?
by: angryThere have been some great posts in various threads about our recently completed fall recruitment and the issues that have come up that are too big to ignore. We saw a record turnout of PNMs but also saw a record drop out rate. Pledge class sizes are all over the map. Some houses have a serious retention rate. Tears were prevalent throughout recruitment. I have to say that I have never met so many great PNMs this year that were dropped after the first event. I have also never seen so many great PNMs drop at pref. Many of the posts talk about transparency and lack of professional oversight of the recruitment process. Who is the professional outsider that oversees the process and policies rush violations (of which there were MANY!). To have so many wonderful PNMs drop out and have a bad experience with recruitment has me scratching my head as to why Panhel has done NOTHING to open up discussion on this topic. Our system is different than many other systems in the country (something we should be proud of!) and there is no reason for so many people to drop with hard feelings. Someone also correctly pointed out the poor handling of the unfortunate AOPi situation. We need leadership, discussion, debate and transparency. We do not need the same old same old which I sadly believe is what we got this year. We also probably need at least one or two new houses. Respectfully I believe the ladies affiliated with AOPi on Panhel should resign so we can move forward asap.

I agree with angry. I never come on this site but someone mentioned some of the comments that have been popping up regarding recruitment so I had to check it out. I too met alot of great pnms this fall and was surprised when certain people didn't return that I expected to see again. I agree with the comment about rush violations not being investigated. As far as I can tell there is zero outside oversite of the process and that is disturbing. I also agree with the request for the AOPi sisters to resign from Panhel until their situation is resolved. So many pnms asked about that house this fall and as there had been no formal announcement from Panhel I honestly had nothing to say other than the dispute was a longstanding one and that no information was available to us. The situation with AOPi is tragic but that houses membership needs to deal with the event, not Panhel. To have leaders at Panhel distracted by their house issues seems unproductive to me and those that I have spoken to on the issue. This is not at all personal. I also wonder why Panhel doesn't produce meeting notes of any substance and why there is no discussion of any of the recruitment issues that have so many of us scratching our heads. Once trust is lost in an organization it is hard to get it back. I can honestly say that based on what I just saw with recruitment I DON'T TRUST PANHEL!

To yes, thanks for the comment! I have spoken with at least 50 people and they all agree with you. As you said, nothing gets done. I'm angry that nobody seems to care about the system. I'm angry that great people left recruitment with hard feelings and tears. I'm angry that the school doesn't police the system at all and certain houses continue with unfair practices and nobody cares. We have no clue what goes on at panhel as communication is non existent. Where are the panhel leaders as we need someone to speak out! Also, houses with retention issues need to be honest and evaluate what is going on. Poor retention (yes that's you dg!!!) reflects poorly on us all.

Why doesn't panhel publish some stats about fall recruitment? Why doesn't panhel make a public statement in a formal way about AOPi? Why doesn't panhel make a statement about commitment to diversity and treatment of pnms going through recruitment? All I've ever heard from Panhel is the sound of crickets....and more crickets. Where are the leaders ladies? Why vote in people year after year to do the same thing over and over? If I didn't love my house so much I would quit in protest but I know that would be pointless. Instead I think I will run for something and try to make some small change if only to make myself feel better after this truly awful recruitment experience this fall.
