rankings

by: hmmm

I went through this last recruitment and while I dropped on pref night, I'm confused by these rankings. What exactly makes Kappa the top house? They had a mix of pretty and then more than a few not so pretty girls just like the other houses. Their philanthropy night seemed just like the other houses except when I asked questions about it, they seemed very unenthusiastic when discussing it. Their house is nice but so are the others. And while they had nice girls, they also had girls that weren't so nice and welcoming. So why are they the top house? they're more like the other houses than not like the other houses. From someone who had insight into the houses during recruitment, all of the chapters seemed similar. So what makes this one so special?

If you aren't in Greek life then you shouldn't be asking why we "care" but why YOU care? Live & let live. Idk why everyone is so obsessed with building up or tearing down kappa tbh. They're literally just another sorority.

I don't think they care or were asking why we care. I think they were asking why rankings are they way they are (specifically why one house is always at the top) because they went through the process and might be interested in rushing again. this whole website turns people off from Greek life in general at every school. but being part of it was one of the best decisions I've made! to the op, if you can, try to go through recruitment again but without looking at this website! all it is are the same people doing rankings and calling out other houses. everyone on here is classless and attention seeking but not all of Greek life at cal is like that I promise!

Great question. Because the people on the top don't care. So they control how big a pledge class of a house should be based on a system that clearly doesn't work anymore. So the top houses remain more exclusive.

Hmmm, I am really sorry that you dropped on pref night as I am sure you could have had a great experience with virtually any house! I hope you keep and open mind and try again in the spring. If it makes you feel better so many great people were let down by all the houses and panhel this fall at Cal. There was definitely some dirty rushing going on and frankly the playing field at a few houses was far from level. The fact that this situation wasn't addressed by panhel as it was happening is unbelievable to many and is still being widely discussed. The leadership from panhel was lacking on so many levels and it makes me very sad that fall recruitment was such a disappointment for so many wonderful candidates. I am sorry you dropped and I hope to see you again!

Hmmm, I thought about your situation again and I have to agree with Good question response. The pledge class size issue is one that needs to be reevaluated in light of what happened with fall recruitment. Some houses stepped up beyond what they were required to do (good citizens) and some didn't because they were not required to (bad citizens). A 'good' house is one where you feel comfortable and where you believe you will enjoy being for 4 years. The issue of exclusivity discussed by Good question is not just perception but a reality unfortunately. But keep in mind it is the systems rules perpetuating this unfortunate reality. Without a discussion of what happened this fall and a look at the rules and quota requirements then the system will continue to lose great pnms. For what it is worth I personally believe kappa was one of the 'bad actors' in this falls recruitment based on pledge class size. I also think someone outside the system should review the lists through each step of the recruitment process and verify that things were handled properly. I don't think things were handled well this year AT ALL. Regardless of the perception of the house, would you really want to be affiliated with a group that chooses to do what it wanted to do rather than help out in a year where there were alot of issues, including the loss of a house? Do your own thinking and forget about rankings as there are great people at each of the houses. FORGET RANKINGS.
