by: Ghedawa122Title says it all. Sophomore considering spring rush/ rushing next year and I'm curious about rankings. Seems like they are dropping along with alpha phi while chi o and adpi are on the rise. Opinions?

Bear, do you have a fundamental belief that everything is fair? Do you believe that just because you show up you are entitled to equal treatment by a system that has been operating in roughly the same way since 1900? I am on your side in this but I'm working from inside the system. My mom was first generation and went through probably one of the most competitive rush scenes in the us. Did she get a so called top two house by your definition? No she did not. She probably got what you would call a upper mid tier house. Thing is she wanted to be part of the system. She was pres of her pledge class, vp of recruiting, and later chapter pres and pres of panhel. What she did by hanging in was progress for all the first gen folks that came later. Because of her experience I understood the limitations of the system but chose to join for what I knew the system could give me. My mom would never have had the job and leadership opportunities she did without her sorority and she is eternally grateful for what she experienced. It made absolutely no difference which house she was in as she made her experience her own and played her own game! I am sorry you don't see it this way. But maybe you made the right decision for you and you will find other ways to contribute to cal and grow and develop yourself. But what makes me a bit sad is that you let others define your experience and let you negative experience get in the way of your personal growth. Just my opinion and I truly wish you well.

Ditto Bear. I wish you the best and your views have been a breath of fresh air in a dark and dank closet that is our panhel! I only ask you to keep meeting people and talking about what is happening in our community. I feel change is in the air as we can't go on this way for much longer. We need a healthy system with each house thriving at the same level. We don't need people to continue to drop out because they don't get one of the five or six houses they deem acceptable. Outdated thinking is killing our system in my opinion but I am only a single voice. But I truly believe that if we wait for perfect anything and fairness then its easy to say count me out and do nothing. But, I'm biased I know! You sound fantastic and I am sure you will make a meaningful contribution to cal. I just wish you could contribute to panhel on some level as I know you have it in you and frankly we need you more than you need us!!!! Best wishes. GO BEAR!

Thank you! I do believe that 116 years is a loooooong time and many many things have changed a lot more since then. We've redefined the institution of marriage itself! But you nailed it! It's a system that's been operating in the same way since 1900! Why? Time to shake it up!
I'm sure your mom was an amazing woman and you sound like you're an amazing woman yourself. I love your passion which comes through. I love Cal and all the wonderful women I meet here and many of them are Greek! They are really awesome women! I know that I'll make a difference through different avenues. I'm already very involved and as you can tell i speak my mind :) I hope one day if I have a daughter I'll be able to tell her to rush cause it's a fair system. Hopefully it won't take another 100 years! :)
