dg sinking with last couple pc's?

Title says it all. Sophomore considering spring rush/ rushing next year and I'm curious about rankings. Seems like they are dropping along with alpha phi while chi o and adpi are on the rise. Opinions?

All these four houses are great and relatively equal. They all have their share of attractive, hot, smart girls. Don't go by social media pictures. DG, Chi O and adpi are all great houses. Alpha Phi is also a great house with some really cool, nice girls. They are fun lloving and party hard and there's nothing wrong with that. But they have some really mean girls who think they are better than others and do some wrong and hateful things to prove that. But that's not majority of the house. It's not their ranking that's slipping but their reputation, and if they don't watch out their ranking will follow. Any of the four would be a great house to belong to!

Very true! Nice to see someone with a positive outlook on all houses. I know OP is a sophomore who has already heard and seen some of the stereotypes but try to go Into the process with an open mind. You honestly just have to go through rush with a mindset that rankings aren't the biggest deal and that you will be fine in any house. Don't let tumors and other people's opinions affect your decision. I don't see a problem with any of the houses you listed or even houses that are "lower tier"

Totally agree! Any of the four are fine! Go where your heart takes you :) that's Ofcourse if u have a choice cause it's not just your call. I think they need to just cap numbers and leave it entirely up to the recruits to decide where they want to go! What's the purpose of selecting and excluding when the stated goal is sisterhood?!

You are right! I was just wondering. I'm first gen and I don't know anything about Greek life so I was just curious. Thanks you

Welcome to America:) You weren't talking about looks but that's what they're talking about! Cause it's bout the looks here! :(
The greek system is brutal on first gen. My advice is to keep your self esteem intact and don't rush. It's not what most want to hear but it's the brutal truth. Join clubs and other organizations that will welcome you with open arms and will gain from your life experience.
Then again, if you're a European beauty you'll get into the top houses! The definition of beauty is very Anglo. Let's just say there's still some catching up to do lol.
But, it's great that you even considered it and reached out!

thanks for the info!I wish I could delete this post now because I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad! I really thought it was a combo of a bunch of factors that go into the rankings. I will have to think about if I want to rush. Thanks again :)

Nope. Rankings are purely looks based. And how white a house is. PNM's come in so biased by sites like this that they basically rank all houses as they are on these sites during the first day of fall formal. If people didn't come in biased it would be more spread out. -former RC

Mirror mirror on the wall who's the fairest of them all? That's the Greek system lol! Yes, EVEN at Berkekey! Sad but true!

Ghedawa122, you posed an interesting question but I fear you entirely missed the point of how best to go through the recruitment process. The entire idea of rankings when each house is unique and full of great sisters is totally outdated and truly has no place at Cal. I strongly suggest keeping an open mind and simply going out to meet people at as many houses as you can. You will know when you meet the right group as you will immediately feel at 'home'. Rankings have zero to do with finding a 'home' for the next 3 years. I am also not sure why you only picked on a few houses? I also suggest that between now and spring that you try to meet as many people in the system as you can and I almost guarantee that this process will steer you in the right direction (it might be that you end up at one of the places you mentioned, but my hope is that you find your true home!). PLEASE FORGET ABOUT RANKINGS! Fall recruitment had a record number of pnms attend and for the most part all the houses got sizable classes which is great for the system. Not sure what will happen in the spring but I hope you have some good options. Best of luck to you!

Yeah that sounds great but be prepared to take a lower house. That's the reality my friend :(

Bear - your comment should state "be prepared to take different house." Need to stop alluding to one being more superior than another.

Bear, your views are what hurt our system and why we still have recruitment issues. Not sure if you are a cal student or not but my recommendation is to do some soul searching on the topic of diversity and acceptance. A strong system is a diverse and vibrant system. You are entitled to your opinion but in my view, opinions like yours have zero place at cal or anywhere for that matter!

My bad lol. Agree! I just know how it feels to be denied entry into what is seen as the "top houses" by the community. Being a minority myself it's like apartheid! Just not calling them " bottom houses" does not change the perception. The reaction which one gets when told that I belong to a "bottom" house is different from the reaction that one gets when you belong to a house that's in the top 6. It's like how people react when you tell them you go to Stanford versus community college. And it's affects human interaction! It affects who will want to post pictures with you! It affects how guys relate to you! It shouldn't be that way, but it is! Then someone told me that it's better to drop than say that you're in a bottom house and so I did that. And you know what? They were right! There was no comparison all if a sudden. I was a "Goddamn Independent", a title I much preferred. I don't know how old you are but I can tell you that this is the reality of a 19 year old average minority girl. It hurts and I don't want anyone else to go through what I did. If you really want to change things then bring in greater supervision, greater accountability and maybe even the dreaded affirmative action into the Greek system cause just sugar coating things does not change a culture.

Bear, I just read what you wrote again. I hope you read it again too as what so upset me is that on one hand you are talking about apartheid and then on the other hand you are talking about dropping because you didn't want to be in certain houses. As a minority I am absolutely not sure how the ladies in the other houses that you dismissed would feel reading what you wrote. I believe that it is people that share your views that make the system worse for minorities not better. Yes I am not a minority and so cannot truly walk a mile in your shoes. But that doesn't mean I can't empathize with your plight and experience. I just can't reconcile you dropping out as in any way helping yourself or other people like you. I am very confused to say the least. How are you any different than a non minority that didn't get their top piks? Frankly you had an opportunity to be part of a system and you turned that opportunity down. Not sure you helped your cause at all. But after rereading what you wrote yet again I'm not sure what your cause is other than yourself!

So should we just accept our place in certain houses and be content? Not sure that works as many houses have become known as " bottom houses" just cause it's less white. I refuse to participate in a system that allows this. My cause is myself and it begins with ourselves. You don't acknowledge that the recruitment is biased! It's totally biased! If I got a "bottom house" fair and square I would take it. But I can tell you that my background dictated the choices I got. There are others who didn't get their top picks. In my case I can tell you that I fit the bill for a " top house" in every way except that I'm not the right race! Even my white friends know it and admit to it! In fact I hang out with a group of white girls who all interestingly ended up in "top houses" when I'm absolutely matched with them in looks and personality! So, I dropped out of a system that I consider prejudiced. Why should I participate in a system that treats people unfairly? Most other non minority girls get dropped because they're either not socially a good fit for the house. That was not the case with me. I was in ASB at a large school. I've worked at a name brand high end retail store. I have a good GPA. I'm considered attractive. I've got great communication and social skills. what are the chances that out of all my friends I'm the only minority and the only one who didn't get my first, second or third pick? Hmmm I smell a rat. I refuse to allow myself to quietly accept what's dished out to me!

To Bear: Honestly it sucks reading posts like this saying that you dropped out of rushing because you didn't get the house you want. By dropping out doesn't help change the system it just hurts you. Instead of meeting a whole other house you're choosing to have no part in greek life at all. Yeah it's unfair because being a minority maybe got you cut from a "top" house but in real life if cut from a job because you're a minority would you completely stop trying? I'm not in your shoes so maybe i don't know the whole story but it's just a bummer that you couldn't help change the system. The only reason ranking's matter is to guys anyways. Most girls in each sorority have friends in other sororities so it's not like most girls actively dislike other girls; So if a guy doesn't talk to you because of your house is he really the guy you would want to talk to anyway? Most times when asked why a girl wants a top house is because of a guy so why would you choose a house based on guys rather than the real reason, "sisters"? So what if you're in a house that's less white, aren't you in fact judging other minorities because they aren't white? The greek system isn't going to change immediately, it'll probably be years before houses truly change, rankings stay the same based on the past and if you can't see it in yourself to change than how are the houses/rankings supposed to?

I agree ^ it's what Gandhi used. Called passive resistance. Don't cooperate with an unjust system.
If you feel that you were not given a fair shake then don't give them your support! It doesn't matter if she would've been happy or not at the house she got or whether she picked only certain houses. The bigger issue here is different. The fact that it was not a level playing field is not right and she chose to not support that system. I fully get it! Those on top need to examine this issue instead of arguing and denying it. If she took what she got and everyone did that there will be status quo of a broken system! The reason why there's even so much discussion about changes that should be made was due to the large number of great ladies who dropped out this fall!

I think all the discussion here is good and positive. I have to think long and hard about whether non participation can solve anything ever. How will anything ever change if people drop and never stand up to vote. You don't get to vote on change from the outside. I realize you were hurt by an imperfect system. But what system is ever perfect? Prior generations of women fought hard to be heard on a variety of topics in many arenas so that women today have choices. I respect your choice to be an independent but know you did it for yourself and in no way are you helping generations to come! How can anything change without smart articulate minorities in the system who are willing to stand up and be counted. I hate to say it but you lost your vote when you left. Change is never easy or comfortable. Look up stories about women that were in the first classes at previously all male schools and what they experienced. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy and who ever advised you to quit did you a huge disservice and a huge disservice to our community. I know by how passionately you feel about your experience that would have been a wonderful change agent. So sorry to not have met you at a panhel meeting rather than on a message board!
