why great women get cut
by: Inside Scoop
If you don't get invited back to a sorority you thought you liked, don't take it personally. Recruitment is similar to college admissions, you may be completely qualified, but there are simply too many qualified people trying to get in. TBH, your odds for getting in an Ivy League college were probably better than for getting into a particular sorority (around 7%). And what you may not know is that some (but not all) sororities consist mainly of women from a certain high school, area, or college sports team/club. In other words, women from high school X tend to end up in sorority X, from city Y in sorority Y, and from team Z in sorority Z, because they have someone on the inside of the house who knows them and will stand up for them.
If you don't know anyone in a house, don't despair. There are plenty of houses that don't feed on women from one high school, area, or team. Your odds of getting into one of the 13 houses at Cal are great! All the houses at Cal are strong and every house has all different types of women. Greek women are the leaders on campus. So if things don't go how you had hoped, don't give up and don't take it personally. It's a numbers game. It doesn't mean you're not pretty, skinny, or charming enough.
All of you are super-brave for going through recruitment. Somehow it all works out in the end. Hang in there! You'll be so happy you did!

Last year my friend dropped when she got dropped by the only house she wanted. She was bored and lonely all year and is rushing again now. I got cut by houses too, but kept an open mind. I preffed a top house and a bottom house. I joined the bottom house and I love it! The girls are great. So glad I didn't make a mistake and end up where I really didn't feel like I fit just because it was higher or drop out all together.

If you preffed a house, it meant that they were willing to have you as a sister and would have extended you a bid even if you did not end up there. Women are not cut or dropped by houses on pref night, they are ranked and, of course, women also rank the houses. Pairings are then made by panhellenic alums (or some group of adult women) based on a number of factors out of control of the houses. So if you didn't end up at your first choice, don't take it personally, they would have been happy to have you. Give whatever house you did end up with a fighting chance. All the houses and their women are good! And all the houses have so many women you can certainly find someone you like there. :)

If you can make it through the first 2 rounds give yourself a huge high five as its rough because of the huge cuts by top houses. But the good news is that you now can focus on figuring out which house to join and you have some seriously good options. Don't look back, just look forward.

Rejection. Just typing the work totally sucks. Yep, it sucks and it hurts. Unfortunately thought its built into the recruitment process. Rounds 1 and 2 hurt everyone and they hurt us to have to make those hard choices (up til 3 am doing the long hard review process). There is no way to not feel the sting of rejection as everyone going through feels the sting at some point during the week. The trick though (and its tough sometimes) is to have a bit of faith (yep, another tricky thing) and keep going. As written extensively here and elsewhere about Cal greeklife we have solid options for people in any number of houses. Look for a place where you are welcomed and comfortable. Academics are a big part of the reason we are here so look for people that understand and appreciate your goals and will support your hard work. Close friend groups are typically small (less than 5 people) so keep this in mind as you meet people in houses...you just have to find a close group of like minded people and then its a huge bonus if you find an entire house of like minded people. I won't share my boo hoo recruitment story here, but know that even if you get your 2nd, 3rd or 12th favorite house on bid night you will somehow manage to find your tribe in greeklife.

People did get cut on pref last year so if this happens to you please speak to your rc or panhel immediately as it is an error. I think it happened to a handful last year and not everyone spoke up which was totally tragic. If you think an error has been made please speak up and talk to someone immediately. The computer system used here is terrible and mistakes (sometimes) are made. Do not leave with hard feelings, check out your situation if you have questions.
