sorority rush - grade cap?

by:

Hello!

I'm currrently a sophomore right now, and I wanted to rush Panhellenic in the fall (so I'll be a junior). I know they take GPA into consideration when giving out bids, and mine isn't as high I'd like it to be :/ I'm barely at a 3.0. I know sororities have terms for academic probation and required grades like that, so this is why I was asking. What are my chances of getting a bid at all from any house?

I rushed last year as a sophomore, but my GPA was even lower than (at a 2.4, yikes.... but i've been working on it!). I was dropped from all houses but one after the first day :/

Any insight would help, thank you :-)

You're below the chapter average for I think all chapters. You will probably have a difficult time getting a bid.

The number of girls they call back and give bids to is divided into two quotas: freshman/sophomore and junior/senior. Most houses will want to fill the first quota with freshman. This means on the first day, a lot of superficial cuts will be made for sophomores based on involvement, GPA, looks, etc. It will be easier to rush as a junior.

I rushed as a sophomore and dropped, but I got called back to 3 houses (my GPA was pretty bad too). Most other sophomores the average was about 5-8 houses called them back after the first day. However, after the first day I think it's fine, because I stuck with it until pref night and I got called back to all 3 of my houses the entire week. (I actually ended up really liking them but dropped because of extracurricular/job reasons).

Long story short, you still got called back to a house as a sophomore (AKA the hardest year to rush) with a 2.4, so you will probably get called back more as a junior with a 3.0. If you're called back to a house and you have a lower GPA, it means they see something more tangible in you, whether it's your personality or involvement, and are less likely to superficially cut you later.

Be positive, be open-minded, and go with your gut instinct. I remember I cried to my RC (LOL) when I got dropped from so many houses and she told me to focus on the ones that did call me back because those were the ones that mattered and those were the ones that will be a better fit for me.

I was really bummed when I got dropped from so many houses, but I just kept it to myself because I was a little ashamed. And they say this whole thing about how a bid is guaranteed as long as you go to everything, so I don't really consider myself have been called back - just kind of by default :(

Did you end up joining a sorority spring or anything? Thanks a lot for the lengthy post, I really appreciated the thought and detail you put into this.

No I didn't do spring-- I still had a lot of other club/job commitments but I will be doing it this fall as a junior too! Also, bid is only guaranteed if you make it to pref night and rank all your choices (there's a possibility of not making it to pref night). Not to be a downer, but to tell you that the house that called you back wanted to call you back and not because Cal PHC has "guaranteed" bids. I knew some RCs who helped me understand the process better last year which is how I knew all this. I know at least one senior got a bid last year, so if she can do it you can too!!
