Sororities but real

by: Go canes

I’m a super senior in an org most people consider to be mid tier. Since I’ve been here, things have changed a lot but stayed the same w sororities. My freshman year before two of these orgs were kicked off/left campus the “rankings” or whatever was that delta gamma was undeniably at the top, despite how they treated some of their members, deeph and SDT were next, then zeta, ADPI and tri delt were similar, chio was pretty much brand new, and kappa kappa gamma was at the “bottom.” Like there is now, there was still a lot of toxicity, as evidenced by what dg did to get kicked off. But in the time I’ve been here I think the “ranks” have gotten a lot less important, and the houses have gotten a lot closer together. There is no clear top house, and every sorority has improved from where they were, potentially because losing two sororities gave the six that were here the chance to take on tons of amazing new members every year. Even though some houses are considered “top”, I think people are caring less about that and every year you see PNMs dropping those houses on the first day and choosing where they feel they fit, not where they think they need to go for their image. The best advice I can give y’all rushing is to just ignore all the bs and choose the one you think you will make the most real friendships in. It’s Miami, not a state school, and girls can go literally wherever they want, whenever they want and if anyone tries to tell you girls in one sorority or another don’t party, they’re lying. We’ve gotten to a point at UM where literally every sorority here is high quality and being a GDI is fine too, so go through rush with nothing to lose. In the past few years, I will say it’s gotten clear that each sorority does have their own vibe, and people that love one may not love another and vice versa. The ones that cross rush the most are deeph and SDT, zeta and ADPI and chio and tri delt.

Deeph/SDT- they’re the most popular, but this is gonna change as people care less and less about ranks. Already I’ve seen a lot of people start putting zeta and ADPI over them in recruitment. However, if they’re your jam go for it. The girls are stylish, like to go out, and get off campus a lot. The con is they aren’t the most diverse, and frankly not everyone can afford to keep up with the expensive life a lot o f the girls live, which is fun if you can and fine if you can’t.

Zeta/ADPI- in reality the most popular chapters on campus as far as a general consensus of likeability. I’d say they’re a midpoint between the deephs/SDT and chio/tridelt in terms of diversity and down to earthness. They’re generally involved on campus and in greek life, have great social relations, and all the girls are pretty nice and happy to be there.

Tri delt/chio- tri delt is usually considered more popular, but in terms of their vibes I’d group them together. Since I’ve been here, both chapters have gotten a lot better, chio from being the new kids to finding their own niche, and tri delt to becoming more themselves and being competitive in rush each year. They are usually the most diverse in terms of race, lgbt and financial status, as well as the types of girls they accept- you could have a group that parties five nights a week and a girl that never goes out. But, they all seem to like each other, the girls are down to earth and from what I’ve heard they’re a little less strict than other sororities when it comes to how much of a time commitment you have to make

Pi phi- I honestly don’t know that many, and it’s hard to tell where they fit in on campus yet. Like any new sorority, they’re gonna need to get to around the same number as everyone else, and once they’re there they can start being more selective and over the years it will become clearer what their “vibe” really is. For PNMs, it could be a good opportunity if you’re looking to form a chapter, with the con being that traditions aren’t established, it could be a little chaotic, and nationals will be pulling the strings. However, I think a lot of people could find a friend there, and it’s a good option if you don’t go through formal because they will be doing pretty large informal recruitments for the next few years.

this is long but spot on. Literally rushees just remember no matter where you go you can have a great experience, and choose with your gut instead of based on anyone else’s opinion

This is long af but probably the most accurate and fair thing y’all are gonna see before rush to get some perspective. It’s not about rank at this point, like someone said on another post it’s gonna be an accomplishment to get into any sorority this year, but about who best fits your vibe because all the sororities are different

So my sister went thru rush at a big state university and it was terrible. She hated her dream school because rush made her feel so bad about herself. She is pretty and outgoing, but got dropped by her top houses every round and ended up in a lower tier sorority that she did not fit in with.

What I learned from her her was not to try to be someone I wasn't during rush and so I dropped two of the so called top tiers before they dropped me. They weren't who I was or who I wanted to be. I focused on the group of girls that I felt most comfortable with. In the end it was really hard for me because I really liked two of them, but unlike my sister's experience I felt like I had some say in the choices.

And the last thing I want to say is that the girls in the lower tier at Miami are still good, I would say they are mid tier type of girls at my sisters school.
