Rushing as a transfer (sophomore)
by: :))Thinking about transferring to UM for fall 2021... I would be a sophomore. Is there COB in the fall (and if so which srats do it?), and is it recommended, or should I wait until spring rush. I really just want to meet people in the fall which is why I’d be interested in COB, but only if all/most of the srats do it.

Hope you get in! To answer your question they don’t all do it, and which ones do it change every year. There’s six on campus, so usually three would do COB in some form. It has its pros and cons. On the bright side, you will have a group of friends, a big, and an invite to parties and a full social calender right away. If you find you really hit it off with a sorority that is doing it, it could be a good move. There are a few cons though- sororities mostly cob friends of actives, so it might be hard to hear what’s going on. I would email Panhellenic if you’re interested and they would probably pass your info on to any sorority doing it. The big con is that you miss the chance to meet all of the sororities before deciding, and you also would be going Greek right away instead of taking some time to figure things out for yourself (not that you can’t do that even when you’re Greek!) I’d suggest going for it if your really hit it off with a group that’s COBing, and if not rush.

Honestly it depends what you’re into. Don’t join a club just because sorority members might be in it, because knowing 1-2 people in a sorority really doesn’t give you that much of an edge because of the mechanics of recruitment. Whatever your majors or interests are, join clubs or orgs along that vein so they can see that your involved. Whether or not it helps with rush, it’s good to get out there and meet sisters from all the sororities to give you a sense of how they act outside of recruitment, because during recruitment you get 20 minutes to make a decision off of meeting like 3 girls. Also- girls from every sorority party. So if you are into that, when you go out DO NOT be the liability that can’t handle her drink or would be a risk management issue because that’s one of the fastest ways to get dropped.
