I think it's because our greek orgs are more of country clubs than a state-school style frat/sorority. Most of the events are at spots like Miami clubs or some off-campus house or some boat/beach. Our greek life's definitely less of an overall campus influence than at bigger SEC/ACC state schools, but then again it's Miami so there's tons of options for having fun.
tl;dr, it's just more independent and laid back.

It is way different. I transferred from a big state Southern School. I was lucky that the sorority that I was in had chapter at miami and the girls here are 100 times better that at my old school.
You were spot on about the top tiers at those schools -- It is who you know and who your family is and where you are from and how much money your parents have. All the sororities have definite types that they go for at my old school and they really don't care about your personality as much as your status. So when they say tier at those schools it is really a socio economic tier. Most miami girls would be pretty happy in most sororities here. I would say the tiers here are not as hard defined and maybe more of preference.
I don't know if that really made sense but I guess what I am trying to say is that sorority's here are all pretty good because the kids at miami are way better in general.
