sad facts

The fact that PIKE has over 200 kids interested in joining immedialy while sammy and lambda chi barely have over 40 brothers is hysterical but pathetic. People love to hate it on pike but whether we like it or not there’s a lot of hype behind them currently. They might come out swinging and be better than lambda alpha sig aepi in their first semester at a colony lol. Just goes to show you how small frat life at Miami really is compared to other schools. We need collectively to collectively as an IFC have to hold each frat accountable and make sure they aren’t failing at recruiting.

The main issue i see with geek life literally starts with sororities. There are too few sororities and the rush process is so brutal and unenjoyable. Due to lack of variety the tiers are made into a bigger deal then they are at other schools.

I know a lot of cool girls that didn’t get in the top three and just said screw this id rather not be in a sorority. Especially since rush is only once a year. At other schools there are so many not sororities in the 10-20 range that it doesn’t matter whose top as much, because everyone has their place, and girls are getting funneled in both semesters.

The more sororities there are the more lower / mid tier frats can mix with other girls and have a more even ratio at all their parties. The more diversity for everyone. Less hostile atmosphere everyone wins. That way you don’t have such a large group of guys who didn’t like what frat they got into all attempting to join a frat they will leave them in a better situation Tier wise: PIKE

At every school there are girls who think they're too good to be in any sorority that isn't "top tier" no matter how many sororities there are. UM could definitely use another sorority if a lot of girls were going through rush and getting dropped by everyone because there just isn't enough room for them in any sorority, but if to them being in the top three is all that matters I don't really feel bad if they got dropped, Most girls in non-top sororities love their chapter, and they still social and go out all the time they just don't have the same 'prestige.' Remember at schools with 10-15 sororities there are double or triple the amount of girls rushing than there are at UM, so it's still as competitive if not way more and most of the girls rushing will not be top tier.

I think she’s right each sorority is double the size of every frat. If sororities got split up into smaller groups tiers would be less of a thing. If sorority rush was done every semester there would be more girls joining without a doubt. The rush process isn’t welcoming enough if it’s only once a year.

Each sorority IS double the size of every frat and I think that's an issue, but that's a national problem, not a Miami one. There are 70+ fraternities and only 26 sororities, and at pretty much every school with greek life there are less sororities then frats as the sororities tend to be much larger. Another part of the issue is the recruitment process; sororities are looked down upon for COBing so they're less inclined to recruit twice a year as they think it makes them look bad, while most frats pretty much everywhere have a spring and fall rush. I think it's because in general sorority recruitment is much more regulated than fraternity recruitment, and the girls end up going through a crappy impersonal process with all the sororities while the frats have more control over their rush events and pledge class sizes and the guys rushing can focus on frats they like. This all sucks for the girls, and I'd love to see UM open up to another sorority, but the problem isn't as easy to fix as just bringing in more sororities, as this is pretty much how greek life works on a national level, and since sororities are so much bigger and more regulated it's much harder for them to change their reputations or fit in to a certain niche.

greek life at miami is really not that great compared to other schools so stuff like this can happen all the time

Transferred to UM from a big southern school with 20ish fraternities and like 15 sororities that had supposedly great greek life. Believe me if you thought Miami was cliquey you haven't seen anything yet. Honestly I'd rather be bottom tier here than top tier there, because the people in greek life and the social scene at UM are just so much better. There might not be as many people in greek life at UM and we might not have big houses, but believe me I'd tailgate at Miami over my old school any day of the week.

I think where ifc screwed up was making pike have to wait till after regular rush is over. There are a lot of kids that only rushed 1 or 2 top tier frats didn’t get a bid nor have a back up plan doing pike. Had pike rush been during the official rush they wouldn’t have as much interest.
