time for change!

AU greek life is held back by the stupid restrictions on sororities. It's the only large greek life school that doesn't allow sorority houses. It's high time that we get a sorority row!

I'm an Alabama grad. Auburn, you are the smart one here. Yes, the big houses are nice, but they drive up the cost of sorority membership like crazy. And those of you saying it's because the alumnae will have more control over the students and keep them from partying at a house - most sororities NATIONALLY forbid alcohol in their houses.
The only thing is, it's unfair that the fraternities have houses but the sororities don't.
One day, Auburn will have houses. I'll be dead by then, but think about lodges. A small number live in, so they're not so hard to fill, but you still have a space for meetings, rituals, storage of records, a place to hang your composites, and letters on the exterior.

We do need houses. It puts us at a disadvantage when students are looking at Auburn.

Really does put us behind when people are looking at schools and we don't have houses.

Why don't we have them? Lack of money? Lack of leadership? Auburn leadership doesn't want them?

It would vastly improve the sorority experience at Auburn and not put us at such a disadvantage.

If there were sorority houses at Auburn, wouldn't chapter/house/parlor fees be somewhere around $4000 per semester? Plus meals would be in the house rather than on campus (making assumption that the university would transfer the meal / dining fees to the sorority).

I'm just wondering how many parents would be willing to foot the bill for four years - $32,000 vs the $9000 or so that is costs now?

I'm also wondering about how to pay for the construction itself? I'm guessing those mansions cost somewhere between $3 million and $8 million, depending on size? Who exactly pays for that? Nationals don't foot the entire bill. So is local alumnae support required?

Asking because I really don't know and I am curious about how 18 houses would be financed. And if the financial impact would reduce the number of women in sororities. Which would then increase the cost to the individual member.

(Accounting person here! :). )

It's done everywhere else. I guess one of the earlier posts is correct....there just isn't enough money at Auburrn to do this. Sad.

The dues wouldn't go up that much. They are financed through the nationals. Let's get some houses!! It would greatly improve greek life here!!

Mommy and Daddy paid for everything you had growing up, so you may not yet understand that money has to come from somewhere. Just because you belong to a national sorority doesn't mean that sorority has backyard groves of money trees up at its Indiana HQ to spend on new AU housing. YOUR dues and fees WILL grow dramatically if/when AU housing and its accompanying furnishings/meal plans/insurances/security measures/house moms are made manifest. Would substantially higher sorority dues and fees be a problem for you or your greek sisters?

I attend UTK & we just got houses a few years ago. UT is enclosed by a river and downtown Knoxville and the highway so there isn't any land to develop. Our houses were placed on the edge of campus which sucks because we can't even park (lack of space) in the village unless you live in a house & the bus system takes forever to go around campus and drop off/pick up there. You end up having to drive and park across the street (if there's room). So we had a lack of space problem, and we still had them built. It's a pain, but they are there. Also, each house was between 3 and 5 million I believe and sororities had to
come up with several million and then the university paid the rest with that amount to be paid back over several years. Ny advice would be to do lodges. Have a meeting space, dining room, and some extra room to work on banners/competitions/etc, but don't live in them. That way girls can eat meals and get to see each other frequently, but you take away the cost of in house living and all the stress of filling houses etc

The lodge idea may not work either. They would be too small for large meetings, not enough money is generated from the small # of exec board live-ins, and parents/students would complain/wonder why the BIGGER house weren't done instead so that ALL the women have a chance to live-in at least one year.

I say we have the tradition of no housing, so stick with it. No need to change what works.
