Yes, it's essential. The top groups could fill 4 pledge classes each, girls are clamoring to get in. Unless you are Miss Alabama, or have extraordinary talents, you pretty much have to know someone to get their attention.

Really there's only three groups that could fill that many pc's. KD, XO and AGD. All the other groups are on par with each other and they all pledge quota also.
