religion in sororities.

by:

Hey y'all i have question! If I were to join one of the more Christian sororities like Alpha Chi Omega, Chi Omega, ADPi, and AGD, would it be necessary for me to be a Christian? I'm really not that religious and I don't go around shouting that. Overall would that hurt my chances not during rush but after to make friends and would I feel excluded? Thanks!

Why would you want to choose a sorority with a Christian reputation if you arent religious? Personally, if I wasn't religious, I'd want to go elsewhere. But that goes for anything! That's why we have sorority reputations. You're put in a group of like minded girls for a reason

You do know that they are ALL based on Christian ideals and standards, right? They all have Bible study groups and go to church together. There are many other activities and groups available outside of Panhellenic if you are "really not that religious". Everyone does not have to be in a sorority and if you do not like the Christian aspect that all the sororities are grounded in, look elsewhere.

I do know all are based on Christian ideals and standards. And I'm not saying that I don't like the Christian aspect for it; I don't mind it at all! All I'm saying is that I'm not THAT religious. I am religious but nothing like bible studies every week type of girl.

who are you to tell someone what their spiritual beliefs are? It's possible that someone might have a different definition of "religious" as you.

There are definitely some sororities with fewer christian girls and less of a Christian "atmosphere" in the sorority. I would suggest seeking out those groups but I would NOT disregard greek like at auburn as a whole. There is a place for you

I consider myself strong in my faith... however I am not in one of the sororities more known for being super Christian. This does not stop me from growing in my faith, and many girls in my sorority feel the same way. Yes, there are certain stereotypes that sororities have, but they're exactly that: stereotypes. You can join a "more christian" sorority and will find girls who are more and less religious than you. You can join a sorority that has absolutely no connotation of being religious and you'll find girls who are more and less religious than you. Personally, I think you need to go through rush with an open mind (obvious, I know). Don't get your heart set on anything until you've stepped foot in their chapter room and had a conversation with a member. You may fall in love with one of the sororities you mentioned, or you might fall in love with one of the other 13. Bottom line, you will find your best friends in the sorority you join based on your rush experiences, not a stereotype.

Thanks so much for your reply; it really did make me feel better! I just felt like since these are the more Christian groups EVERY girl would be going to the bible studies and church together. I don't really do all that stuff so thanks for the answer!

I think you all know you cannot just decide to pledge a group since you may not get a bid. There are 17 sororities and they all have a Christian foundation and they ALL have Bible studies. You don't HAVE to attend those, so if you did not feel the need or the want to go, you do not have to go. I know girls in all the sororities and each group has a strong backbone of those who are strongly religious and then there will be some girls in each who are not as public about it. There are no sororities who are known for being not religious. Be yourself and if you are given a bid to one you feel comfortable with in the religious area, accept it, if not, do not accept. It is simple.

It really doesn't matter tbh. Im about 0% religious and I'm in ADPI and my sisters love me for being myself. You'll never be pressured to believe in something you don't want to believe in. Just go through rush being yourself! Religion is also not something that's talked about unless YOUR bring it up.

@lol is correct. Your sisters will love you for you and you will find what sorority you belong in regardless of anything else

I'm an atheist and I'm in a sorority. I just ignore the Christian activities and go about my life. Most sororities will have rituals based in Christianity; I just don't say the parts that talk about God. It's really not a big deal.

Hope this helps!
