future of au greek life

by: Truth

I think something needs to be addressed in regards to quotas for some houses. Groups like Lambda Chi who have been throwing out bids like Theta Chi did to build numbers are hurting Auburns overall greek life when the smaller/middle tier fraternities are left with fewer options during rush. Then you add in the fact that the top fraternities are hitting 50 and some going over. If they took more pride in rushing kids, getting to know them, instead of racing to see who can finish first so they can start pledgeship early then they wouldn't have to worry about missing out on so many kids and would easily get 40 top quality guys. Truth is greek life isn't as popular at Auburn as some other schools and there isn't as many guys to chose from during rush for the fraternities who can't live off their name. All they are doing is making the gap bigger for middle/upper middle fraternities to improve which will hurt Auburns overall greek life when there's only 5 good fraternities. I know the KAs, Sigma Nus, Betas, Fijis, and Theta Chis won't care and will continue doing things behind IFCs back but I think it's something IFC needs to address

Summer pledging is just ruining things. It comes to Formal Rush and it just does not mean anything. Either have one or the other. IFC needs to realize that Auburn is getting a lot more top notch (academically) out of state kids with the merit scholarships. Those kids don't necessarily come for summer rush parties and get lost in the loop. Kids are jumping at bids and not even looking at their options. It really is a joke and Auburn fraternities are just going downhill across the board.

instead of posting it on here why not address this issue to the IFC chairmen or something of that nature

I know theta chi's numbers got progressively small to average to large over the years. They built their popularity without handing out excessive bids. Though it seems Lambda Chi is using carpet bidding tactics. All of the top fraternities are very selective during their rush. Fiji, Sigma Nu, Beta, Theta Chi, and KA all turn away well over half of their rushees over the summer and pick their cream of the crop guys. It's called being selective and it's a benefit of being a top tier. Try building your own fraternity the right way instead of complaining. Most of the top fraternities had to build from nothing at one point in time to become one of the best (ie. Fiji, Beta, Theta Chi).

I would agree with you but you're posting on a site that is constantly advising rushees they should only look at 5-6 houses and everyone else are second options instead of rushees finding their best fit they feel like they have to get into the highest "tier" house they can.

Realistically if Fiji, KA, Sigma Nu, Theta Chi just didn't have a cap, then they'd get most rushees, not because other houses aren't trying, but because that's the only places people advise them to go because it's looked down upon to pledge anywhere else besides those top 5-6 houses. There's absolutely a hierarchy in Auburns greek system like there is everywhere else, but this summer it became more obvious top fraternities were rushing to finish their pledge class instead of making sure they got the right guys.

Those top fraternities have huge amounts of rushees come to their events. So many to where they usually only bid 20% max of the rushees per rush party. The point is that they know they're getting the right guys because they're able to pick the few that they see as best fit for the fraternity. That's also a key reason that they're recognized as top tier. They can be very selective and the large numbers will naturally follow suit.

Not everyone wants those fraternities that are listed as the top. Sure, if you are from Birmingham, Montgomery, etc.....maybe. But, for the small town nice guy, those fraternities too often are not a fit. A fraternity with great involvement on campus and a strong brotherhood is what everyone wants, and you can find that in a lot of the fraternities in the middle. As far as pulling top sororities, the middle guys do pretty well. By the time you are a junior most sorority girls don't care what fraternity you are in or even if you are in a fraternity.fi d a place where you can be you. I would not choose be of the fraternities listed as top on here.

Instead of complaining about how kids are going after the top tier fraternities you could have put forth some effort into your own fraternities rush? OP and others are talking about all these great, top notch out of state kids well, ok go and get them. Give them a reason to not only want Fiji, Beta, Sigma Nu, Theta Chi and KA, and Lambda Chi. This is the largest freshman class in Auburn's history, don't be so dismissive of the kids the top fraternities are getting just because their numbers are high and they're taking a lot of kids from Alabama and Georgia. Auburn Men are top men regardless of where they're from so if you're in a fraternity that knows of guys like this, don't blame IFC for allowing top fraternities to add as many quality guys to their brotherhood as possible just because your fraternity was not willing to put in the work.
Remember, rush never stops so if you want to add quality guys you've met to your smaller fraternity then work harder, paint your house, dress nicer, don't get so drunk, etc. Do the little things instead of whining.
Lastly, remember the Creed.

Rush is a disadvantage to guys that work or are out of town. By the time they get to Auburn in August the top fraternities are totally full with the exception of 1 or 2 spots. The solution is there should be a summer bid limit. Like 25 or 30 max. The rest of the bids should not be allowed until open rush. This is only fair to top guys from out of state, camp counselors and those that have jobs.

I understand where you're coming from but there are many very good fraternities here. Yes it may be unfortunate that a kid in that situation may get locked out of say Fiji or Beta but that's where we say you need to get to know all the fraternities. If you're a top guy a middle tier fraternity still has a lot to offer you. Auburn is a great university and a great fraternity system. Find the right fraternity for you if the initial fraternity you wanted is telling you no.
If you're a middle tier fraternity and proposing that 25/30 cap, well, do the work and put forth the effort to find the quality kids.
After all, caps and quotas are for communists.
