top fraternities
by: Out of state rusheeThis may be a bit superficial, but what are the best fraternities (top 5 or 10) and what are the chances I could get could get a bid from them as an August rushee?

Previous topics. The "top 5" vary in order but most agree that: sigma nu, SAE, beta, Fiji theta chi, And KA (I realize that's 6, like I said top five vary each person has their own preference). Here is MY opinion of top 10
1. sigma nu
2. Beta
3. theta chi
4. Fiji
5. SAE
6. KA
7. Lambda chi
8. Sigma pi
9. ATO
10. Farmhouse
1-6 are most likely not giving many more bids (SAE and beta most likely to hand out bids)
The others are worth a look. Also sig Ep and pi Kapp are both good for OOS kids.

I agree that everybody is entitled to their opinion. Here's my list with comments on my changes to Read's list.
1. Fiji
2. Sigma Nu
3. Beta
4. Theta Chi

As far as the top 5-6, you can't put Fiji that far back in my view. A fraternity like KA for example, has a strong name but really lacks quality. Fiji has a very strong name but also excels in quality in most areas. That's why I think they should be #1. KA and SAE are both falling but SAE is much harder than KA, so you'd have to put KA in front. Theta Chi is on the rise at a fast rate and have all of the quality of a top elite fraternity, but their name hasn't gotten extremely big yet. Soon it will, but for now I'd leave them out of the top 3.
In my eyes, the top 7-10 is mostly correct. Sig Ep needs to replace farmhouse. This is simply because Farmhouse's social life is so extremely poor that they can't be a top fraternity. I also agree with "Read" about the chances of getting into these fraternities at this point. Hope this helps

To each his own, FIJI just doesn't seem "fun" enough to me to hold a spot that high. I do, however, agree that KA and SAE are falling. KA won't go off the grid anytime soon but its possible SAE could. I think, if that happens the Lambda and Sig Pi will move up. Both lambda and sig pi have good things going for them (OP I would check them out, I'm pretty sure they are both still handing out bids). Lambda has one of my favorite houses. Its great location, and looks cool. I know that in previous years they have been trying to get numbers up (ex. they took in Sig Chi's pledge class last year) and I say they're good brothers (a few apparently are weird according to others but thats just what I've heard). Sigma Pi is good also. Their house location sucks (end of "old row") but the house is nice, at least from the outside, and they built a new party barn. Aside from that they seem involved on campus and have a good rep, i think. Never heard anyone talk bad about them, but never heard anyone head over heels for that fraternity. Both pull decent sororities.
Anyways your comment on Sig Ep, I feel like they're like a lesser version of Pi Kapp (again, my opinion). Both are known for having OOS kids and partying (usually getting one big name artist a semester). Pi Kapp's house is nicer in my opinion and I've just had more fun there. Sig Ep isn't bad by any means I just feel like Pi Kapp is a better alternative. ATO is worth checking out also.

This list is based completely off of the overall quality of fraternities (brothers, social, involvement, brotherhood). How big the name is and popularity plays no part in my list.

I actually really like sigma pi but they're certainly not higher than sigma nu. Rest is debatable, it really varies on what you value more in a fraternity. Beta has such a solid rep with sororities you can't put them that low even though they don't party and aren't very close with each other. If you took 10 kids and gave them all bids to Sigma Pi and Beta, majority will choose beta solely on their reputation

I absolutely agree with you on the Beta/Sig Pi point. Though, to be honest, if they were actually given a chance to see all aspects of both fraternities I wouldn't be surprised if it went 50/50. Beta is much more popular, especially with the sororities but their house (inside) isn't that great and their brotherhood lacks. By no means am I saying that Sigma Pi is perfect but I do think they could put up a fight, I feel like their location really hurts them.

It's hard to rid your mind of the popularity aspect, but once you take that factor away I think your list it pretty accurate. Fiji/Theta Chi belong in top 2. I think Sigma Nu, Sigma Pi, and Beta would compete for there next 3. I honestly don't think SAE has much to offer at all other than some parties and wouldn't even put them in my top 10 quality. Lambda Chi, KA, ATO, Pi Kapp, and FH make up the 6-10 spots interchangeably because they each offer strengths and lack in different areas. Just my 2 cents on the matter

No girl would ever down talk all of the "top" fraternities like that. Sigma Pi is good and on the rise but not better than any of the others listed imo. Maybe better than sae but it's close.
