scared of rushing

by: hello

i might be going to auburn in the fall but i'm nervous about sorority recruitment. I'm mexican and im from out of state so i feel like im automatically at a disadvantage compared to the majority of girls that go to Auburn and will be rushing at the same time. how likely is it that i will be judged based off that? Im also just overall nervous because i feel like i won't have as many rec letters or connections there as all the other girls will so this is something that’s kinda making me unsure.

You can get a bid. Lots of girls come here without connections and get a bid. You can't do a thing about not having connections so focus on the things you can do something about because connections aren't the only thing that matter. Grades and resume are important, and so is being well put together and being able to hold good conversations. If you are cute and sweet and fun then that's what the actives rushing you will see no matter your background. You will experience being released from many sororities which is very common, and it will STING, but you need to stay open minded to the sororities that ask you back.

Hey! I am a POC and out-of-state too, and ended up in my top house! No connections too! Make it your priority to find a sisterhood that wants you! If a house drops you, it will definitely hurt. Trust, I know exactly how that feels. However, I realized I didn’t want a house that didn’t want me back! When you go through recruitment, don’t let your fear of not fitting in hold you back from having fun conversations and making new connections! I know I was a little hesitant and afraid. My other piece of advice is to start following sororities now!! Follow some of the girls, DM them questions! Chapters want to see that you are interested in them :)!

I know social media isnt a true reflection of a chapter, but it truly does let them know who you are if you start now! I am friends with plenty of diverse girls in my chapter, and I am so happy that I rushed! Keep those grades up and try getting letters of rec by reaching out to alumni groups on facebook or instagram! You got this!!! Good luck!!

To add to this:

When you get released from sororities in recruitment, IT IS NOT A PERSONAL JUDGEMENT ON YOU! Each sorority is given a limit they can invite back each round and some sororities have to release more pnm's. Sororities like many more girls than they can invite back. You may have some great conversations and the actives rushing you may have felt a real connection to you but it's a chapter decision, not just up to the girl or girls who rush you. Getting released does not mean they did not like you or found something wrong with you, it is just a numbers game.

Don't buy into the rankings nonsense. What is 'top' for some pnm's is not 'top' for another. Every sorority here is good and offers a similar experience. This site is terrible and not a reflection of the actual real life of sororities here at Auburn.

Many sororities allow recs from third parties that know the pnm well, meaning a teacher or coach or school counselor or boss, someone other than an alumna. And some allow a rec from an active member at a different school. You will have to check each sorority's site to see who allows what, but this does make getting recs a little easier.

make sure to prioritize your ice water tea video. do your hair and makeup, wear a dress, and practice as much as possible and send in the best take. i made a huge mistake bc i didn't have any connections except two and i waited until the last day to send in my vid and i got dropped by 14 chapters after IWT. if you have a good resume and do a good job on your vid, you'll have a great shot. chances are some chapters will drop you automatically bc they only take girls from certain areas (and unfortunately only so many POC). good luck!

Hey girl! I'm out of state as well and went into rush with not a single letter of rec. If you really want to try to get some, think back to some girls from your town/high school that your pretty sure joined a sorority and just text them! Girls in sororities write letters of rec all the time.
I came from a totally different culture as compared to the south and literally only knew my roommates. I just tried to be a genuine as possible during each round, tried to find connections with each sorority's philanthropy, and just expected everything that happened. Getting cut from some sororities broke my heart, but I tried my best to stay positive and focus on the fact I got back one of my top houses!
I'm now in an amazing sorority that accepts me for who I am. I will recommend the most during recruitment to meet girls in lines and your pi chi group if you don't know anyone. Rely on your pi chi, they are only there to help you and don't judge you for anything. And once you join a sorority try your best to get involved. Previously I wasn't involved and disliked the whole thing at times, but now im involved and love it!
