Sorority Help Please
by: yupI'm from out of state and I've been reading a lot on how "out of state girls are limited on sorority choices." I'd consider myself fairly outgoing/extroverted, smart (4.0+ GPA), and conventionally pretty (I guess). I am majoring in a time consuming major, but I also want to join a sorority. I want to be in one that's standard mid/upper mid, but I don't know if that's possible. Please let me know any sorority recommendations (given this criteria) or advice!!!

Honestly, whatever you think or whatever other people say about this on here does not matter in the least. The houses do the choosing. Read that again. The houses do the choosing. Pnm's don't have nearly as much choice in the matter as they imagine they do. It is a competitive rush and there are hundreds of pnm's just like you every year: pretty, smart, outgoing, etc. Each house can only invite back so many pnm's from round to round so they must make cuts, including cutting amazing girls. The houses do not know how you rank them so that isn't a consideration for them; they have to cut girls they love all the time for the sake of numbers. Be prepared to be cut from houses you love and remember that it is all about numbers and not something to take personally. Sorority members cry every round too when their favorites don't come back. Your ranks of the houses will matter only in the event you are invited back to more houses than you can attend for a round, otherwise you will be going back to houses you might not have considered. This happens to everyone with very few exceptions. Focus on the houses that invite you back because they really want you. Forget the ridiculous tiers, every single sorority here is fabulous.

Advice said it perfectly. But I will add something-why would you ask anonymous people on the internet for advice on where YOU belong? They don't know you. And you can't trust the people on here that say Oozma Omicron Omega is the only one you should join. What if OOO is a bunch of whale worshippers and that's not what you're in to? Yes, that's a ridiculous example. But it's to make you see how ridiculous your question is. Over a thousand girls go through rush. And guess what? They are all outstanding. Thousands are members. They are all outstanding too. You can find your place anywhere if you go in open-minded.

honestly a sorority is what you make it. I was in phi mu and ended up dropping, one of my friends is a theta and LOVES it. I know girls who can’t stand being in KD and girls who bleed purple and white for tri sigma. People who are chronically online here would say certain things about all the girls I described and their experiences simply because of rank.
I know I have no moral high ground because I’m snooping here, but I guess what I’m saying is keep an open mind and know that even if you don’t end up where you feel like you “should” be because of house rank, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a chance. What you’ll remember in 40 years is the good memories you had, not whether or not you were top dog.

There are definitely a few sororities that are harder to get if you’re out of state but the chance is never zero! I am personally from out of state and I never got the opportunity to go see KΔ or ΑΔΠ which are kind of the most infamous for only taking girls from specific places like bham, but I did end up in an amazing sorority that I am beyond happy with that has a good mix of girls even quite a few from bham!! Depending on where you’re from out of state some sororities tend to have more northern girls and some have more southern! Ex: ΣΚ, ΠΒΦ, ΖΤΑ tend to have more northern to midwestern girls whereas ΦΜ, ΑΓΔ, ΑΟΠ, ΑΧΩ tend to be much more southern! Of course there are tons of acceptions to all of these!! Just go in with an educated but open mind, try to make a genuine connection in every house(I’m friends with some of the girls that rushed me even though we didn’t end up in the same sorority!) and trust that the process will lead you where you’re meant to be! The whole top/mid/bottom thing is totally subjective and everyone has different opinions on it. There isn’t a single sorority that is perfect nor is there one that has no amazing aspects to it!! Honestly going to a sorority just because you think it’s top/upper mid or something is how people end up the most unhappy.

please, please, please stay off this website l. you will find your place, i promise you. please don’t get caught up in the “tiers”. i have friends in the “top” tier sororities and they hate it, because they only chose them bc they are popular. please choose the best fit for you, all 18 chapters have good people in them and they all have something to give, tiers be damned

Don’t worry about it. I know that’s easier said than done but you’ll end up where you need to be. Certain sororities take more out of state girls. If you have a good gpa, resume, and are friendly and bubbly during recruitment you will have plenty of options. Alpha xi takes a lot of out of state girls
