local girls
by: outofstateVery disappointed in the entire process. It was obvious that the girls from in state are chosen first. Reading the girls' post it seems you need to be either, from in state, or have a friend in a sorority. This is very unfair and elitist. Out of state girls without friends or relatives already in a sorority don't stand a chance! Truly, there should be a sorority place for every girl who wants one. How awful to be excluded.

I have watched far too many rushees who come through, are the perfect rushee on paper, but aren't very good at the basic skill of talking. Some are so quiet natured that it is hard to really get to know them. That can be a huge reason to pick someone else who has a much more bubbly personality.

I agree - oos girls can do just fine. However, they need to be prepared the same way in-state girls are. Go in with recs to each group, have great grades, be involved, and first and foremost keep an open mind.
Auburn Panhellenic did slip this year though on some rules and needs to start keeping the same rules for each group. There was one group of senior girls out in their sorority shirts the night before rush. In my eyes they should have had their quota reduced for an infraction like this but nothing happened. AU Panhellenic is clearly unorganized - their web pages are behind two years which in itself speaks volumes and looks poorly on the university

It is hard to come to a new place and make new friends when some girls have hometown connections. Most Auburn sororities are very good at accepting girls from other states, but it's always easier to be accepted by those who have mutual connections. I am very sorry for your poor experience.

If you wanted a sorority where you knew girls from high school, you should have gone to your state school. The whole point of going to an out of state school is to meet new people. If the sorority you like best likes other girls they know better than they like you, say all right, you'll be happy with a different house. All the girls are pretty amazing so you really can't go wrong.

My sorority is a large percentage OOS and while I can admit it is a 'who you know' sort of playing field for out of state there are many girls who knew nobody in the sorority before bid day, myself included.
In the beginning recruitment is all paper, but by the end your personality plays into it and can hurt you.

Auburn is pretty much an "instate school" with people that cannot get into more competitive universities. It's a fact you'll have to live with.
