local girls

by:

Very disappointed in the entire process. It was obvious that the girls from in state are chosen first. Reading the girls' post it seems you need to be either, from in state, or have a friend in a sorority. This is very unfair and elitist. Out of state girls without friends or relatives already in a sorority don't stand a chance! Truly, there should be a sorority place for every girl who wants one. How awful to be excluded.

With not posting hometown information. I think it would support that OOS girls are successful in finding a sorority at Auburn.

If you are OOS, why did you choose Auburn of all places??

Auburn is pretty much an "instate school" with people that cannot get into more competitive universities. It's a fact you'll have to live with.

It is amazing how you spout this crap about Auburn being for people who cant get into more competitive schools. Auburn is harder to get into than Bama...in fact I believe it has the toughest admission requirements of schools in AL.
(and Troy the lowest...but to be fair there are reasons people go to each school, )

"in Alabama". Key words.

Private schools - Birmingham-Southern, Samford, Springhill have the highest academic requirements. Auburn may have the highest of the public schools - but bear in mind how many wash out of Bama during their freshman year - just because you got in doesn't mean you can make it through the curriculum

Pretty sure even Auburn is more difficult to get in to vs Samford

I have watched far too many rushees who come through, are the perfect rushee on paper, but aren't very good at the basic skill of talking. Some are so quiet natured that it is hard to really get to know them. That can be a huge reason to pick someone else who has a much more bubbly personality.

That's the issue...99% of them are the perfect rushee on paper. These days they almost all have high gpa's. As reference chair, I will tell you that most of them have gpa's over a 3.75. Heck, the incoming freshman class overall(all students admitted) at AU averages 3.7. I have never seen so many gpa's OVER 4.0. They take ap classes and smoke them. They are accomplished, pretty, and poised. It is uber -competitive. Every pledge class looks like a beauty pageant. Naturally, it is gonna come down to who you know. That being said, the quality of our 17 groups has also risen so that they are all attractive options. If you got a bid to any of our groups, do the dance of joy and thank the good Lord above.

I agree - oos girls can do just fine. However, they need to be prepared the same way in-state girls are. Go in with recs to each group, have great grades, be involved, and first and foremost keep an open mind.
Auburn Panhellenic did slip this year though on some rules and needs to start keeping the same rules for each group. There was one group of senior girls out in their sorority shirts the night before rush. In my eyes they should have had their quota reduced for an infraction like this but nothing happened. AU Panhellenic is clearly unorganized - their web pages are behind two years which in itself speaks volumes and looks poorly on the university

It could be worse. You could have gone to Bama.

It is hard to come to a new place and make new friends when some girls have hometown connections. Most Auburn sororities are very good at accepting girls from other states, but it's always easier to be accepted by those who have mutual connections. I am very sorry for your poor experience.

If you wanted a sorority where you knew girls from high school, you should have gone to your state school. The whole point of going to an out of state school is to meet new people. If the sorority you like best likes other girls they know better than they like you, say all right, you'll be happy with a different house. All the girls are pretty amazing so you really can't go wrong.

My sorority is a large percentage OOS and while I can admit it is a 'who you know' sort of playing field for out of state there are many girls who knew nobody in the sorority before bid day, myself included.

In the beginning recruitment is all paper, but by the end your personality plays into it and can hurt you.
