local girls

by:

Very disappointed in the entire process. It was obvious that the girls from in state are chosen first. Reading the girls' post it seems you need to be either, from in state, or have a friend in a sorority. This is very unfair and elitist. Out of state girls without friends or relatives already in a sorority don't stand a chance! Truly, there should be a sorority place for every girl who wants one. How awful to be excluded.

My daughter pledged last year. Out of state student (not even southern) decent grades but not stellar, NO connections or sorority affiliations. She LOVES her sorority. She knew going in that top tier was out because she was not southern. If you keep an open mind going in you will get a bid. All au sororities are wonderful. From what my daughter says There seems to be all types of girls in all the sororities too

If you are open to every sorority there ia a place for you. Some girls come to Auburn thinking that they are above some sororities. Those are the girls who call home crying to momma because for the first time in their lives they were given a dose of reality. I'm not trying to purposely hurt any one's feelings, but the reality is that very few girls get shut out during recruitment. Most of the time they drop out before giving it a chance.

There was a freshman last year, a friend of mine, she came to Auburn from California and ended up a KD. She's beautiful too..so that helps but it's def possible.

Then you have sororities like Gamma Phi who are most out of state girls.

Out of state girls have a place in Auburn greek system, maybe not a big of one as in state girls but they have equal opportunity too.

My daughter came through last year as a non-legacy, out of state, zero connections PNM. She preffed three chapters and received a bid. Her sorority has many, many OOS girls. That is what my daughter wanted and she loves it.

There IS a sorority place for every girl who wants one! I am thrilled to be a part of the Greek community at Auburn. It doesn't matter to me what states my sisters hailed from. They are beautiful, intelligent, involved, and sincere. Stunning chapter room!, and you could feel the love and joy in the room. All the pnm's in my Pi Chi group were impressed with them. So BLESSED to be a baby kite. War Eagle and Theta love!

I agree that out of state girls who don't know anyone at Auburn are at a distinct disadvantage during rush. Many out of state girls (from Georgia and Texas) ate attending Auburn but know many older girls from their high school who attend Auburn. This creates a "pipeline" into sororities and quickly fill up the quotas. I find it infuriating that girls who are rushing are repeatedly told that they are not at a disadvantage if they don't have some connections (e.g., out of state from an area where they don't know anybody at Auburn). When the girls are dropped by sororities during rush, they will blame themselves instead of a flawed system.

Adjusting to college is a major life transition which is stressful. To put young women into such a stressful situation in their first week of college is awful. While the current system may provide a support system for the girls who pledge, I suspect the vast majority of girls who do not receive a bid during rush transfer from Auburn within a year. I wish the school was more sensitive to this issue.

There is a disadvantage but if going into rush your daughter is aware of the "southern" cuts they will be more secure in knowing they will still find a great sorority with a mixture of regions. With the global world we live it it is wonderful to know people from all over. In my opinion, the sororities who cut oos girls are missing out!

Of course recruitment is biased! Did you think cuts were made randomly? Members choose PNMs who are like them or who have something unbelievable to add to the house. If your daughter had gone to her own state school, she could have benefited from that tendency. Since she came here, she has to realize that these girls are also going to rush compatible girls. Girls they already know and love have the inside track -- just like your daughter would have at her state school.

Welcome to the real world! Not to be harsh, but it's tough everywhere. Mostly because of mothers and preconceived opinions about certain sororities. There are awesome chapters everywhere.

Stop being such a helicopter mom

Your daughter probably suffers from special snowflake syndrome and went in thinking "I can only go ABC"

Obviously girls who go in knowing people will be at an advantage, why wouldn't they?

And PLENTY of girls come from OOS and have a successful recruitment. So, what was wrong with your daughter? Being attractive, with good grades, a great GPA, being president of this and that makes your daughter no different from the hundreds of other girls who go through

It's true. What's up with moms coming on here and ranting about their socially awkward daughters not being successful during recruitment when hundreds of oos girls ended up in a house?

Her daughter is no more special than the other good looking chicks with high GPAs and extracurricular activities with good recs.

Actually, out-of-state girls who do not know anyone at Auburn are probably the most open to all of the sororities because they don't come into rush knowing much about any of them. It seems to me that the local girls would come to rush with more preconceived ideas of where they would like to join.

My original point was that being an out-of-state girl from Georgia is very different than being from a state or city where no one in your town or high school has attended Auburn in years. Your assumption that my daughter is socially awkward is incorrect (and offensive). You immediately assumed there was something wrong with me or my daughter rather than acknowledging that the system is biased. I understand why it is biased as it is human nature to try to help out people that we know and like. What bothers me is that the university is not up front in sharing this information and that girls are hurt by this rejection.

Being from oos doesn't mean pnms don't come to sites like this and form opinions.

Common sense says that girls who have 10+ friends already in the sorority are at an advantage. But that doesn't mean girls from oos don't find a home :)

makes me wonder about parents who have raised their kids in the "everybody should get a trophy" environment. This is the real world.

If your daughter is applying for a job, and there is one opening and 26 people applying for it-- should the company hire all 26 people?

Yes, recruitment (and everything else) is harder on out of state students. Look and see how many OOS students are in the top 5 or 6 sororites or fraternities, SGA, cheerleaders, etc. compared to the percent they represent. However, quota isn't set until the last day of sorority recuitment, so, if the PNM makes it through the week, follows the rules and keeps an open mind, there is a spot for them. So, if you want to join an NPC group and meet your new friends for life, go to socials and formals, buy Lilly stuff with your group on it, raise money/awareness for a great philanthropy and all the other things that go with membership, you can.

Case in point: AGD has 6 OOS PNMs. There are 4 from Georgia, 1 from Texas and 1 from Mississippi. Sixty-eight legacies went through and ten are NMs.

I saw that too. Really surprised they took so few OOS. KD only took around 15. This may come back to bite them later on.

I think it is extremely sad that we label top tier sororities etc. At AU all sororities are wonderful. This labeling comes from those groups that think they are top, and yes they are all southern or Alabama residents. You cannot tell me there are no wonderful, beautiful, intelligent girls who come from out of state. When young ladies who "have to have" that one sorority learn that all are great then everyone will be happy.

Where can this breakdown of information be found. I noticed that Panhellenic only posted names in alphabetical order and sororities. No hometown or state was listed.

Panhellenic is intentionally not releasing the bid list with hometowns this year
