why are they dropping out of state girls?
by: out of stateI’m only going back to 3 Sororities this round and everyone I know from out of state is in a similar situation and we don’t know why because I know personally I’ve had great conversations at almost every house during ice water teas.

ok I’m in the same situation!!! Basically everyone from my group is from vestavia or mountain brook and they have almost full schedules but I’m going back to 4 and I had a great gpa and test scores and volunteer hours but I’m from far away and don’t have the personal connections that these girls do.

The Stav and the Brook... they just have so many connections. Don’t compare yourself because just a different situation. They all end up in like four houses anyway...

Don't feel like they thought you were not good enough or wouldn't have made a great member there. Houses must make releases at every round and personal connections are very important. Also, not having recs is often the deciding factor when a house is choosing among a bunch of great girls.

When I went through rush a couple years ago, I was an out of state transfer student (rushed as a junior) and I was only invited back to one sorority for philanthropy round. It's common for them to cut out of state students, especially transfers (older students) because they want people who will be in the sorority all 4 years.
A lot of the reason they cut out of state students is because lack of connection. Especially if you have no reference letters. If you know someone, or are friends with people who are in a sorority, you're much more likely to be invited back. When people can personally vouch for your character and your likeliness to fit in with the group, you're not as "unsafe" or "risky" to give a bid to.

I have a 4.0+ gpa, 30+ act, great leadership and volunteer involvement in high school, danced all my life and is from Alabama; however, I’m down to just my number one sorority and the three sororities I dropped. Could it be because of being first generation and not having much recommendations & not a legacy?

Legacies get dropped all the time. Not having recs or connections are major reasons for drops. But don't focus on who dropped you; you've still got options and all it takes is one!

I'm a first generation and not a legacy and had a full schedule my entire time I was at rush. The first cut of rush is the hardest because the top sororities are asked to make HUGE cuts - the first to go are those who didn't have grades, don't have recs, or didn't make enough of an impression.
I know it can be hard to get dropped from other sororities, but you still have 4 sororities on your schedule!! Keep in mind, there are some girls who don't even get the chance to make it to philanthropy round. Keep on trucking the rest of the week - wow these girls by being yourself. Even though you may have dropped those 3, you may begin to love them.

It’s the not having recs that is the problem. Our house did like to see some Greek relatives. It made for a much riskier situation. But that was way down the list of reasons to cut. But we cut for not having recs. I just have to ask, why didn’t you get recs?

I went to the county Panhellenic meeting for future freshmen and gave them my resume but they said that the member that is representing the sorority has a choice in writing you a rec or not. But other than this meeting, I couldn’t find many people to ask for recommendations. (I am also a poc if that matters)

Did you have recs? Were you involved in high school? Is your GPA low? Have you volunteered anywhere? Did you clean up your social media (and I mean all the way back)? Do you have a questionable reputation? Did you present yourself well in IWTs? These are reasons to get dropped no matter where you are from. There are OOS girls in every single sorority at Auburn, so that’s not a reason to be dropped. Period.

Panhellenic makes some of the big sororities like alpha gam, ADPi and KD drop over 1,000 girls first round. That really sucks because even if they love you there may not be anything they can do. Grades and involvement play a big role since it’s so hard to get to know people in ice water teas

The releases are not nearly that high, but there are bigger releases early on at certain houses because of the NPC process called Release Figure Management. It benefits the pnms' and the houses. Each house must release a certain amount of pnm's based on their historical return rates. Houses who statistically have had higher percentages of pnm's wanting to return there, observed over a period of years, must release more pnm's earlier than houses that don't have as high return rates. Without RFM, pnm's used to be carried to further rounds in certain houses even though the houses already knew they were going to drop them anyway, and all the while those pnm's were dropping other houses off their schedules where they actually had a chance. When those pnm's were inevitably dropped, they were often left without any houses at all. This situation also left houses short of pnm's and forced them to take pnm's just for numbers and to snap and COB more often. RFM evens the playing field and allows pnm's more chances to find a home with higher quality new member classes across the board.

It's not up to each sorority how many the have to drop each round. It's determined by Panhellenic and not the same for each sorority. A sorority cannot invite back one single person over that number. Auburn has way more instate students than out of state anyway.

Do they (alpha gam and aoii especially) make huge cuts from philanthropy rounds too? I am a furst generation that didn’t get cut first round but is scared that I will this round. I had great gpa act and involvement in high school:/

Not sure on AOPi but AGD probably does. Basically each sorority will get down to about 200 (guessing on that number from past-don't know yet!) or so coming on Pref Day so it's a huge funneling down from 1700 to 200. It's tough but honestly, the sooner a sorority releases you, the sooner you can seriously focus on the others.
Try to keep a positive attitude and an open mind. Honestly give each group a chance. There are GREAT girls in each sorority at Auburn and you will find your niche!

Since groups are small and alphabetical, I seriously doubt this.
