letters of rec

by:

How much do letters of rec really matter here for the sororities? Does it depend on who you are?

They matter...it's not the most important thing, but why take a chance of not being asked backed for something so easy to do for each chapter.

Oh honey, is it too hard for you to find alumnae and ask for a rec? Well then, don't you worry your pretty little head about it!
You're so fabulous, every sorority will want you! Never mind your squalid rep, or your pitiful grades! Who cares when you have that gorgeous body?!

post is completely unnecessary! You can answer the question without being condescending. I don't know anyone who acts like this person who responded, and hope we never meet.
Recs are very important at Auburn. Get one for every sorority! Put your best foot forward, and be sure to go in with an open mind - and give all 17 a chance.
Welcome and hope your rush experience is AUsome!!

It does depend on who you are. And if who you are is a PNM getting ready to rush at Auburn, you need recs. I'm out of school now, but deal with lots of PNMs in my work. Some are legacies, some have tons of friends in sororities and some are total packages as far as grades, activities, looks, etc goes. None of them would even think of trying it at Auburn, or anywhere in the SEC, without recs. Most PNMs will have them, and it's just too competitive to try to go against the grain.

Just start checking with every lady you know who went to college. See if she has a Greek affiliation. Teachers, bosses, neighbors, friends or co-workers of your parents , anyone you babysat for or went to church with, the mothers of your friends, your old scout leader --ANY women who went to a four year school is a good one to ask. But you need to get moving. Alumnae are getting slammed with requests for recs right now. Good luck!

One rec per sorority is fine. Auburn's rush is not nearly as competitive as some other southern schools. Everyone finds a spot.

The poster must not be an Auburn student. It is very competitive for all the sororities and if you don't think so, tell that to all the girls who do not get a bid. Word to the wise...don't cut yourself out of rush! If you don't get an invite back from the group you wanted, but you did get some back...go to the parties and give everyone a chance. There's very few times that any of the groups need to pledge anyone after rush since they all make quota. Go in with an open heart and hopefully you'll find a place.

Oh my, not sure where you got your info, but Auburn is a VERY competitive recruitment. Please don't head into it thinking otherwise. Take the advice given by "Definitely" about accepting return invites even if they aren't from your favorite chapters. That really is some of the best recruitment advice you'll get. A lot of PNMs who end up bidless do so because they choose to drop out of rush when they aren't happy with their return invites after a round. A lot regret it, too, because recruitment ends, they see those chapters out in real life, meet more girls and realize that it might have been a great home for them. Stick with it and give a chance to those who invite you back. Opinions change as the week goes on and you meet more members and learn more about the chapters.

And really, be prepared for a competitive rush. I'm an adviser and all over the south. Auburn is MORE competitive than a lot of southern schools. One, it's in the SEC, which is the most competitive sorority recruitment in the nation. Two, it's one of the most competitive inside of the SEC. Not kidding about this.

With so many girls going through recruitment, recs are an easy cut (so are grades). If you didn't bother to get a rec, they have a reason to let you go and focus on someone who did.

Having a rec won't get you a bid, but not having one may prevent you from getting a bid.

You need recs, plain and simple.

get them!!! A sorority cannot pledge you without one. However, if you have a hard time finding one for a sorority, keep in mind that ultimately the responsibility of getting a rec falls to each chapter. If you come through rush and they love you but you don't have a rec, they will find an alum to do a rec on you. But really try to get one on each one.

Never assume that someone has done it for you. Get several/sorority.

What about if I am not sure a rec got sent in? How many is a good number to try to get? And how many is too many? (like would be annoying to the sorority)
