holding a bid

Is it bad to hold a bid? If you hold it for too long, will the fraternity just take it back?

The top fraternities won't let you hold it passed a certain point. They have lots of rushees wanting to get bids and limited spots, so they aren't going to reserve a spot for someone that doesn't want it. Most, of not all, other fraternities will let you hold it as long as you'd like.

Follow up. If I do accept my bid, should I just immediate text the other fraternities to let them know I've accepted elsewhere?

You should do it if you accept a bid to another house. It helps them because then they won't waste time or resources trying to recruit a PNM that has no interest in their frat. Recruitment chairs have a hard enough job as it is. Help make it easier for them by doing that.
