theta chi or ka?
by: Legacy 2018Quick question. My dad and brother both went to Bama, but I'll be coming to Auburn. Dad was a KA and brother is a Theta Chi. I hear those are two of the best houses here, so those will probably be where I primarily rush. What are the differences between the two that set one apart from the other? Preciate it.

They're more similar than either one of them would ever admit. They're big names at Auburn, the two most 'southern' fraternities, they compete over the same groups of guys in rush, they pull girls from the same sororities, and they own the two biggest and nicest fraternity houses. The only difference is how active they are socially. Theta Chi's are the partiers that throw big parties, while KA is more laid back and throws smaller parties. You really can't go wrong with either. Theta Chi
Pros: More well-rounded. Throw better parties and date functions, while also typically ranking higher in grades.
Cons: Became a dominant fraternity around 5-7 years ago - they're not a household name among older generations.
KA
Pros: Bigger, older name at AU with more tradition. Dominant fraternity in the SEC.
Cons: They're well plugged-in on campus but other than that, they're pretty average across the board. Many other houses do things better.
My Opinion: Even though KA is an bigger, older name here, the edge goes to Theta Chi. They've outcompeted KA and dominated in rush overall for the past few years, which has improved their reputation. Theta Chi is simply a better fraternity in most aspects. That being said, KA is still a very dominant fraternity and easily better than 90% of the other houses here, so you'll still be in a great place if you pledge there.

Very accurate. But look at other chapters, too. SN, FIJI, Beta, ATO, etc. All good ones.

This is a very accurate comparison and most would agree. That being said, even though Theta Chi is probably the better fraternity, it's not a fit for everyone. I know some guys prefer the low-key social scene at KA over the ragers at fraternities like Theta Chi and Sigma Nu. That's why I always advise kids to rush the places that fit their personality and not chase better fraternities just for the name.
