2017 bids being wrong

by:

I am a parent of current freshman who recently went through 2017 rush week. Up until Tuesday night she was on the list for 10 sororities and when she received her call on Wednesday morning she had been dropped by all of them and the only one she got called back for was one she dropped. She ended up dropping out but was told later from sophomores and juniors of a few mid-level sororities that she was on the list to next round and they are not sure what happened. We have been hearing rumors of bids being wrong in the computer system (mainly for out of state girls). Has any one heard of these issues?

That's the problem with the way sorority rush is done. Girls' futures in college are determined by computers and not voting processes like the good old days. Nothing is done be heart anymore.

The good old days involved certain chapters keeping many, many girls up until pref, then dropping them. The girls had dropped other houses earlier in the week and had no where to go.

RFM has certainly leveled the playing field and strengthened all of the chapters. Looking at Auburn now vs the good old day???! No comparison.

@Joe: Nice troll. Is Hillary is still blaming computers for her loss?

I wondered about what happened with my daughter also....she put 8 in order of her preferences after "sisterhood" round, then got her top 2 for pref. She went to parties, her first choice house had a girl that was rushing her and was with her most parties literally told her " I can't wait for you to run to our house tomorrow and I am going to make sure your my lil sis..etc etc " --- fast forward to bid day -- got 2nd choice. ( I think we are all grateful she got second, and nothing at all! And is a good group of girls also!!

Is it possible to have your first choice rank you say # 60 out of 80 spots and your #2 Have you up higher on their list and the computer just does that? My daughter just was stunned to be basically told she was "in" and this happens. I am just grateful she got a bid to a group she likes. Also, when ranking those 8 it was #2 on her list. I am sure plenty of girls went to pref with # 5 or even lower on their list after sisterhood round ...but we are still perplexed. We are out of state also.

Anyone have insight to this?

The girl rushing your daughter should have never said those things. And, no, your daughter could not be ranked at 60 on choice number one and received choice number two.

The bigger issue is telling anyone "you're in." It truly does not work that way. Rank on any particular sorority's list is never shared.

Like you said, every sorority at Auburn is wonderful.

The PNMs can not "drop" a sorority.

Ok, then she was not high enough on their list...then her second choice she for sure was? Ive read about houses having to "add" members bc of the system. Not use if I'm communicating what I'm trying to say...

Is it possible to go to pref and be totally cut? It's a freaking miracle anything works out! It is so hard to understand this system and I was Greek in the horse drawn carriage days!

Still hard fior my daughter to understand-- to have these conversations with this girl she loved and they were so emotional that both my daughter and this cute member were literally tearing up. The girl may have been crying from exhaustion- not bc of my kid!! Just grateful it's over and she's with a good group. -- I told her yesterday what I keep reading - trust the process. They're all darling girls!

Every PNM who goes through pref is guaranteed a bid as long as she ranks each house where she attended pref. If she went to two prefs but only put down one house (called suiciding, or SIP) then there is a good chance she will not get a bid. Not only might she not get that house, but she would not be eligible as a quota addition. Also, no one member can say for certain that a girl will get a bid because it's not up to that one member. I'm sure that girl meant it, truly, but hers is not the only voice.

"She ended up dropping out but was told later from sophomores and juniors of a few mid-level sororities that she was on the list to next round and they are not sure what happened." I seriously doubt this happened.

And please stop saying that out of state girls are at a disadvantage. They are not. the majority of my sorority friends are not from the state of Alabama. You must have Auburn mistaken with the Old Row houses in Tuscaloosa.

The girls she talked to did not know where she would end up. In fact, only the recruitment chair and maybe president or someone even know the exact order of the girls. Sorry. I think girls say stuff like this because they are gracious and don't want to hurt your daughter's feelings. She shouldn't take it seriously. And you should back off, Mom.

Were there any other problems noticed?

There were no actual problems. Just people who don't understand the process. See the post Sorority Bid Process Explained

Do legacies go to the top of the bid list on pref? If your daughter goes to a house whose legacies fill top spots - it is very possible that the sorority loved her but spots are filled with legacies first.

By: Wonder girl

Legacy bids are not the reason your daughter didn't get her first choice. Legacies do get an extra look during recruitment, but they do not automatically get a bid by any means.
1) Not all legacies are carried to the pref round. Only legacies that are the perfect fit are invited to pref because they do go to the top of the bid list, so chapters have to be absolutely sure. Many legacies are released before pref for this reason.
2) Not all legacies rank their legacy house first on their card. The matching process will try to match with their first ranked house, whatever house that is.
Any girl who gets invited to pref is wanted by that house, but houses are bound by quota so that's the reality.

I'm in a sorority and I know after going through some names that were put in a weird order on the list but they were all fixed by sisterhood to my knowledge. The computer can be really weird sometimes but they try to be super through for bids to be passed out so I don't think she would have gotten her second choice by a computer mistake.
Also girls can get dropped from a majority of the sororities for a multitude of reasons or just not quite being high enough on the list.

The computer doesn't make mistakes. Sometimes a house hands in a wonky list that doesn't reflect what they really wanted, but the computer accurately reflects what is entered.

Joe, that was their way of being kind to your daughter. Blaming the computer is code for "Bless your heart..."

There was something that triggered a drop from 10 to 1. Grades? Did she talk about partying/politics/religion/boys/money? Has she made a bad reputation for herself? Was she rude because she wasn't hiding the fact she'd only accept a bid from certain chapters? Was she overconfident in a legacy status? Does her social media look bad? Was she missing recommendations?
