missing out without houses

by: honestly though

We are missing out big time without sorority houses. I feel like I'd be so much better friends with my sisters if we did have them. Visited a friend at Ole Miss last weekend for the game and I am so jealous of their houses. Obviously I love auburn and my sorority here so I wouldn't transfer for a house, but I really wish we did have them. Is there a way we could start a petition to get them? Or do you have to be high up and important in your sorority to be able to put that up for vote with Panhellenic?

Part of the reason I chose auburn over other southern schools was because of the Greek life & the lack of sorority houses. As a college student on a budget, I can't afford to be forking over $6,000 per year just to be in a sorority. That's insane. I love how dues at AU are so affordable thanks to housing in the Village. If auburn does decide to get sorority houses, I hope it's after I've graduated so I don't have to pay for it!!

The dues are not that different. Check your facts. We do need to make a change or we'll fall further and further behind.

There are no houses at Auburn because when the school started one of the founding female members said that having more than four women live together constitutes living in a brothel. Apparently, there is some clause saying sorority houses can't be built or this founder's family will pull back their donations.

This rumor has been going around for DECADES at every single school that doesn't have sorority houses! A variation of it is that town or city codes say that women living together constitutes a brothel...don't buy into it! It's so ridiculous that this rumor keeps going round and round. Use your brains people.

So much wrong with that. First of all, there were no women founders of Auburn. And it was founded as an all-male school, so nobody even considered women as students for the first 40 years or so. By the time women were eventually admitted it had become a public school, so any founding members would no longer have a say. And good point above, how would you explain women living in dorms? BTW it's only been in the last 15 or 20 years that there has even been a woman on the board of trustees. So if we want sorority houses, it's gonna have to be the WOMEN who make it happen.

We are missing out. Puts us at a disadvantage, for sure. Lived on the hall last year. It was fine, but still a dorm. How can we get this changed?

Agree! I've visited friends at several other schools. Dorms are no comparison to houses.

Agree. I'm in the hall this year and just visited some friends at another school. Houses vs. dorms...no comparison.

Not really. They are expensive to build, maintain, and pay for. Plus ZTA has the wealthiest and strongest housing foundation. They will make all others pale in comparison.

I spent the weekend at UNC in Chapel Hill and all of their frat/sorority houses used to be private homes. They're beautiful. Could Auburn do something like that? It avoids building brand new houses.

Lots of schools use private antebellum homes and turn them into beautiful sorority houses (been to Athens??). True, not many of those around here, but surely some houses would work.

There are some nice homes that could be turned into houses. Let's do it!

I've visited friends at other schools. The houses sure are nice and I didn't hear any complaints about the cost. I hope to be part of getting this changed while I'm here!

dues at my school (big 10) are anywhere from 2000/semester to 7500/semester. all but 3 sororities are housed. no one complains about dues because our houses are castles and living in is amazing.

Which Big Ten School only has three sororities? Did you mean to type 13?
