missing out without houses

by:

We are missing out big time without sorority houses. I feel like I'd be so much better friends with my sisters if we did have them. Visited a friend at Ole Miss last weekend for the game and I am so jealous of their houses. Obviously I love auburn and my sorority here so I wouldn't transfer for a house, but I really wish we did have them. Is there a way we could start a petition to get them? Or do you have to be high up and important in your sorority to be able to put that up for vote with Panhellenic?

If you want your sorority to put it to a vote AGAIN, you should go to your own sorority to find out how they would like to go forward. Petitions do nothing if your own sorority does not support it and will not put it to the others. Before any vote however, property to place the house must be shown as well as the cost of what kind of house will be built. More goes into it than someone just wants a house.

All other schools have them. Don't understand why it is not doable here. Is it lack of money? I keep hearing that.

By: Houses!

Money For houses comes from the national organization, specifically from each one's national housing corporation. There is plenty of $.

No. Housing corporations don't hand out money for houses. The chapter has to get a loan to pay for the house, meaning a mortgage, and that's where the housing corporations help out, getting a loan from a bank. Before getting a loan the chapter needs to raise enough money to make a down payment, usually 20-30% of the cost, which comes from the sorority alumni, not from the national house corporation, and be able to show how they will pay back the mortgage from members' dues and fees. Before starting all that, the chapter has to have enough money to pay an architect to design the house and put the price tag on it. And even before that, all the sororities have to agree that they are going to build houses too. So, the chapters, the sorority alumni, the sorority nationals, and the school all have to agree that it's going to happen. If all these different groups can come together and agree, it will happen. It happens at other schools and can happen here. All it takes is some strong leadership and passion. The money isn't the obstacle, it's just the size of the project. Any BC majors out there?

There has to be major alumnae support. That is where I heard there was a lack of money. Wish we could do it!

I've heard it's about money, too. Hey, it may take us longer but let's do this. We really look pitiful compared to most other schools.

it's honestly not a big deal lol. you can live on your hall and become closer with your sisters that way and spend time with them in your chapter room. you don't need a house to become closer with people in your sorority.

Not having houses is a factor in girls wanting to come to Auburn. Or not. It's not the only factor of course, but it's a consideration. If you are choosing between schools and you know you want to be Greek, and one school has big, beautiful sorority houses and Auburn doesn't, well there you go. Does Auburn admissions know or care about this is the question...

Keep hearing it's about money. Not enough resources in the alumnae base. I hope we can get this changed!

Hi, this is very true. I'm a high school senior and I was picking between Auburn and Alabama (ironic, I know but my dad went to Auburn and mom went to UA) and I love Auburn but I'm going to Alabama because of how awesome their greek life is and the houses tbh

I'm in the same situation as the girl above, except my Dad went to Alabama and my Mom went to Auburn and was in Alpha Xi Delta. I liked Auburn a lot, but I just preferred Alabama's greek life

It's just not comparing us to Bama, it's all of the schools around us. EVERYONE has houses--mostly nice houses--even smaller state schools. We have dorms. That is not acceptable and we do need to get this changed.

People, do you not understand or is this GR continuing to post this question over and over...The financial part has nothing to do with the college!(Money for a house DOES NOT COME FROM THE SCHOOL!) To have a sorority house you must have property that is on or near the school campus (otherwise it's just apartments). There is very little property around Auburn that is available for sorority houses and there must be enough property for all the houses. Alumni have plenty of money but you have to have a place to put a house first. Please stop asking this question on here and ask your own sorority for information. This is silly.

Tennessee managed to find enough land to build their Sorority Village. The school owns the land, the sororities lease the land but own their houses. The school manages the parking lots and security. If Auburn could have a designated gated community like that for sororities it would benefit the chapters and the school.

by: Good idea but...

there is not much land close/available to the campus since all has been bought up for the new education buildings. No college no college is going to have sorority houses not situated on their campus for security reasons and no national is going to allow their groups to live off away from the campus. IF there were going to be houses it would have had to have been planned for years ago. Personally, I like the way it is now. I live in an apartment and love it, see my sisters but I also have my own place to getaway. I transferred from a college with houses and believe me, it doesn't take long to get tired of the constant barrage of people running around. Besides, like someone wrote, even if they get houses, none of you on here commenting would get to live there, it would take a long time to buy property and build a house...however you would help pay for it in your dues.

So our house at Alabama is one year old and it cost $15 million to build. Our dues are $3,500/semester. I love the Greek life at Alamaba but it costs so much. Here's the funniest thing...hardly no one wants to live in them sophomore year. Truthfully...you're just fine without the houses! They're great but they cost a ton of money and by no means make the sisterhood closer!

Why does nobody want to live in the house sophomore year?

Chapters at Alabama have like 500 members so the houses have to be huge, and huge means expensive. We don't need $15 million houses, just something scaled for our school where we can hang out and hold meetings and eat together and it only needs to sleep one third of the membership to make it work.
