need input on rushing

by:

I know I'm not too smart or athletic and just sociable, but I'm just trying to find a fraternity where I can just hang out with people I can call my brothers and people that could become my family away from home. I'm confident enough to be accepted by one but I just don't know how rush and bid processes work despite this being my second time rushing. I feel as though I'm not the typical guy who would fit the "frat guy" type of guy, but I feel as though a lot of my friends who are in Greeks appear to fit that stereotype. However, I just want to join a fraternity because I've always wanted to join one since I've applied to UCI and heard about it in high school. I'm fine with drinking and smoking, and having alot of socializing with brothers and exchanges with sorority sisters, but I feel like that shouldn't be everything a fraternity is about, rather, I just want to be accepted and be part of a brotherhood where I get someone's back and they get mine's and something like a bond that will not only last 4 years but will last beyond college.

Don't think about ranks when rushing. Also, I'm sure you've heard of the stereotypes from things like Animal House, TFM, or any other "frat" movie, believe me not every "frat" is like that, although this website notoriously displays alot of self-ranking, name-dropping, and overall being douchey, you gotta go meet some brothers during rush and see that not all "frat guys" fit the Southern stereotype or fit the gym junkie douche.

As a member of a "top house" who has many close friends in other fraternities, from what you seem too want, it sounds like you should join a "bottom house"(I don't believe in tiers) "Top houses" like my own typically have much larger numbers of members which makes it much much more cliquey and difficult to connect with everyone on a personal level. Yes winning sports (I'm not very athetic) is very awesome however, a smaller organization would provide a stronger brotherhood as you would get to know everyone much better. Too late for me, as I've chosen already and plan on graduating this year but that's my 2cents.

I think this is very accurate advice, but I would still check out at least one top house too because you really never know if you will fit in. Since you've rushed before you probably have some houses in mind. Good luck!

what do you think of the mid-tiers? I just want a fraternity with alot of brothers and alot of connections with other sororities?

Just ignore the ranks and find out who you feel comfortable fitting in with. All the chapters here have great connections and of course some have better sorority connections than others but in the end you will meet sorority girls. It doesn't matter how big or the reputation of the frat. Its all fabricated anyway. I didn't even know about ranks until much after I joined. I'm in one of the upper middle houses.
