dying greek life
by: The truthThe simple fact is that Greek life is dying here at Uci and honestly I can attribute it to the fact that no frats actually throw bangers here!! This is probably due to the fact that housing around Uci/Newport is very expensive and not designed for huge parties like these other state schools. Yes havasu and Vegas is fun but honestly not worth the extra money and I’m broke after just a few formals. No one wants to party in a small ass vdc apartments and all of the frat house parties are the same sweaty hot box and really aren’t worth mobbing too. After turning 21, there really isn’t that much incentive to go out to any of these frat parties anymore. All I have to say to Uci frats is step up your Housing!

The thing is there is no viable place to throw bangers.
AV: it will get shut down by 12. Rooms are small so it gets hot and cramped fast. It would be better if the parties were held in the common area/the halls etc but that is wayyyy too risky and a frat would risk losing their house.
ACC: It’s not the small rooms in AV but it’s still a very small venue. Gets hot, cramped. Typically gets rolled by 12-1.
UTC: similar to ACC. Less chance of getting rolled but it still does happen more often than not. But instead of dealing with duty, you’re dealing with the police.
Newport: requires an Uber/10-15 minute drive to get to. Old rich people enjoy their peace and quiet so parties are also prone to getting rolled. The only good part about Newport is daygers. But personally, I prefer night parties. Newport is hit or miss. It sucks being there for 30 minutes then needing to catch an Uber back to AV.
Irvine houses: also hit and miss. Irvine PD really cracks down on parties. Neighbors typically call the moment they hear anything.
What Irvine lacks is a true “Greek row”. Where chapters own their houses and have the liberty to do whatever they want in them. Especially if they are clustered, you don’t run into the issue of having neighbors calling the cops due to noise complaints.
There is nothing frats can do. It’s unfortunate.
The ideal situation, but not realistic in the slightest, is having Frats purchase the empty land beyond VDC. Frats can then develop their own mansions. They will be further away from ACC so chances of getting noise complaints will be lower. They will only be a 5ish-10 minute walk from AV (less drunk driving). Frats can throw ragers anytime and occupy the entire house without worry. They can decorate and design the house to give it character. This is the dream but it would never happen. UCI/Irvine would never sign off on it. And I’m sure the land is reserved for another ACC project down the line

Even if we did have a Greek row uci would crack down on that as well.Greek life is getting cracked down upon all over the nation. Tcu frats can’t even party at their Greek row houses anymore without getting shut down and fined. This is happening all over the nation. the truth is uci will and never be designed as a party school in fact many of the people I’ve met chose uci over UCSB and other schools because of this certain environment which is 100% not a bad thing. We just have to make due with what we have as there is way that uci would ever get a Greek row after the incident from last year
