honest opinions on sorority expectations

by: greeknewbie

Hey! I'm an incoming freshman girl, and I'm looking to rush this year. I've been scoping out the forum, and honest to god, some of these opinions have been so critical, I'm unsure of what kind of answer I'm going to get.

But, considering most girls are looking to rush a top tier sorority, what do you think is the overarching personality of the top tier houses? Are the girls looking for someone sweet and genuine, or are the popular sororities giving off some kind of ABG vibe?

Also: parties, question mark?

You shouldn't necessarily be rushing to be part of a 'top tier' sorority. You should be rushing in hopes to find girls you genuinely admire and connect with on more than just superficial stuff like looks and partying. These girls will potentially shape you into the person you become for the rest of your life, so focusing on something as superficial like ranking based on hotness or perceived personality type is counterproductive. Do your future self a favor and go in with an open mind and open heart, you'll more than likely find where you actually belong, not where other people think you should be.

Said very clearly by someone in a low-ranking sorority. There's going to be girls that you connect with in every house. It's not superficial to aim for a house with more status, that's just life. It's literally the same as going to a brand name college, there's just perks to being better connected. You're more bound to have a good time if you don't limit yourself to being comfortable, you have to TRY to sell yourself to the houses, and girls have every right to decide that they want to be somewhere where they matter.

“The real truth” this would be true if ranks really mattered here as much as they do at schools that have extra ass Greek Life lol. Imo just go with the flow when you’re rushing Bc you’re gonna have the same “perks” in most houses (except maybe SK rip) and it’s more about your personality than anything else here in terms of the fun u have and connections u make. Who cares in the end we jus havin fun and making friends

There are broad characteristics that each house has but honestly those are just generalizations. At least here, you don’t really have to fit a house’s “type” to get in and the chapters are a lot more diverse than what appears on GR. Be honest with the girls and with yourself, be open to new things, and ask questions when you go into each house to get to know what they’re about and you’ll fit in just find wherever you land. Good luck and have fun!

Recruitment is like an interview. Dress to impress, be prepared by having good questions to ask in case the conversation plateaus. Talk to the girl and learn about her, about the sorority, as well as connecting that to yourself. Show interest in the things she mentions their chapter does. From that, you can gauge which sorority best fits your personality. That way you get to choose who you like and you aren't letting the sororities dictate.

If I knew all of this every house would have wanted me based on looks, athleticism, grades, and being down to party. I was too chill and laid back I think so I only got invited back to half of the houses. I got the chapter I think that was best for me at the time, but as I've grown into my senior year, I feel like I could've been invited to the house that I never got to go to because I had a class conflict on day 1 of recruitment.

Agree to treat it like an interview. And then if there is a sorority you really dont want you aren't obligated to show up or you can still show to be considerate and just be really quiet.

Think about it like a job. Dont you want to make a good impression on all jobs you apply to so you can get as many offers as possible and choose the best one? That's recruitment for ya.

Seriously wish someone gave me that advice when I rushed!!!!
