greek life

by:

I feel like being Greek is like being in high school all over again. The popular sororities want nothing to do with fraternities that they think are not up to par with those in the top tier, rumors spread like wildfire, and you see cliques everywhere. Everything seems so fake and this isn’t what I signed up for. I thought being Greek meant being social and making connections as well as experiencing the bond that exists within the organization but it isn’t when you really think about it. It’s all about guys looking for hot girls and girls looking for hot guys pretending to care about their fraternity or sorority. Was wondering if anyone else is feeling the same way.

One only needs to read the comments here by members of "top houses" to see that high school is not that distant a memory.

Tearing others down to try and build oneself up...rather immature, but likely something some people will never outgrow.

It's unfortunate that you landed in the wrong house. Had you joined the house you felt most comfortable with during rush, which I'm assuming you didn't, you might have had the chance to build life-long relationships with good people.

Time to change. Try participating in events that you have not considered. Take time to really get to know members of your chapter you have not spent time with in the past. What are you really interested in? Go join in campus opportunities. Then bring other chapter members into your interests. Don't wait for others to make your joy.

Joining a Greek society is really what you make of it. You get out of it what you put into it. Don't waste your time worrying about other groups - their reputation and what they do or not do. More importantly, don't worry about what they think of you and your group because that's not something you can control. They'll think whatever they want to think no matter what. Instead, focus on yourself and the people you chose to associate yourself with. When you do that, you'll see the rewards of the friendship you nourished til your twilight years.
