best fraternities to rush for fall 2018

by: 2nd year

If you are coming to Davis next year and looking to go Greek, here is the list of fraternities that are worth rushing (from my observing). Do not bother rushing the ones not on this list.

Sigma Chi - currently the most popular, and have good relations with the sororities. Mostly exclusive events.

Sigma Nu - achievement based, good brotherhood, brothers are easily approachable and like to have good time.

Zeta Psi - smaller in size but still rage hard. Relatively new on campus but they are well-established with strong alumni support.

Pike - lacking in diversity but still a fun house. Mostly exclusive events. They throw small parties once in a while, and they are fun.

Theta Chi - very diverse, this house has an interesting character. They have the biggest frat house on campus. The paint party in their backyard is pretty lit

PiKapp - smaller sized frat house, the newest fraternity on this list, but is on the rise. They throw down once in a while but mostly exclusive events.

TKE - big frat house, known for the open parties. This is where you want to be if you are into raging hard 24/7.

Chi Phi - an average house with nice brothers. Haven't met a lot of brothers from this house but I've heard nice things about them.

TKE is way below even theta chi, pikapp, and maybe even chi phi.

I’d only consider the first 4 worthy of rushing. Everything after that, you’ll be working throughout your college career to improve relations/reputation. But go with the house you fit in with the most, it all works out in the end.

the top 5 on this list, it's in order of most popular -> least. I'd say decent gap between top 4 and theta chi but large gap between top 5 and the rest

I don't think there's a problem of rushing the frats that are not first 5 on the list. Pretty sure Pikapp will do so much better than now if they get a bigger house, TKE have their fun by throwing open parties, Chi Phi is chill, etc. There's no problem rushing a fraternity that is not on the list either. Check out every house during rush and join the one you get along with.

The problem with fall rush week is that it is only four or five days for two hours a day, which is far too short a time to really get to know all of the houses. To make things more complicated, practically all houses prefer if potentials visit at least twice during rush week, it shows that you are serious. My advice to new freshman is to think of welcome week as early rush. Go talk to as many people in as many houses as you can during this time period, at night and during the day. Don't be afraid to talk to a guy in letters at the gym or join a game of beer die on a front lawn, its what they are there for.

Another thing to keep in mind: Do not confuse friendliness with belonging. Guys will try to be nice to you to trick you into joining their meh brotherhood in order to gain members. Davis has waaay too many fraternity chapters for the percentage of students in Greek life, meaning most of them are weird/creepy/filled with goobers with a few chill guys who were tricked back in the day and are now trying to trick you. Don't make the mistake they made, you will wish you never rushed...

nah, they barely have any guys and are bottom tier. I'm sure they're nice just not one of the mainstream frats

fwiw sig nu and sig chi are on probation into next year and won't be having anything at their houses for a while which hurts them. And honestly the guys in zeta psi and pike are cooler than the ones in sigma nu. At everything I've been to the guys in those two houses seem to have the most fun. But if you're rushing, just go with what feels right to you.

What does that mean they can’t have anything at their house?

just means they can't have exchanges at their main house for a few weeks during fall quarter, so they'll have them at satellite houses instead. not a big deal

Ya all of parkway circle (Sigma Nu, Sigma Nu, and TKE) is on social probation until the end of October. Their landlord is really cracking down and screwed them all over but its honestly not that big of a deal as its only half of fall and they have satalites.
