advice to pnms (and pnm moms)
by: Alumna
Hi PNMs! Last year some upset moms came onto this board without a lot of understanding how recruitment works. Some kind advice:
1) Many are bewildered and disappointed when Round 2 party invites come back. Bright, talented women with great resumes and grades will see their lists and be shocked and hurt. (I was one of them!) I really want to encourage PNMs to realize that nearly every single PNM at UF is a bright, involved, smart woman, and that every chapter would be lucky to have them, but chapters are not allowed to offer invitations to everyone. This doesn't mean they are "just cutting on looks" or "are superficial." Just like a PNM can go to a chapter and "not feel a fit" even though the members may have loved her, that street runs both ways. Being invited back to only one or two chapters is still a very serious honor.
2) People will say "the cuts were extra harsh this year" or "too many girls rushed for too few spots." This is 100% false. The formula that Panhellenic uses to tell each chapter how many women to invite/release is adjusted up based on the number of women going through recruitment. There is no hard cap on the size of pledge classes. Most women who truly give each and every chapter a shot will find a home, and this year, Gamma Phi Beta will offer an different pathway for many women to Go Greek, too!
3) Active sisters want to make the experience as positive as possible for PNMs! Give every chapter a shot, they've worked hard to prepare for you!

Great advice. We are dealing with the brightest of the bright when it comes to any student at UF. We are dealing with the most involved student with the highest level of leadership - thats the reality of ANY UF student as well. Its hard. Its competitive. Its part of life. Not everyone can get that "trophy" in life. the way the system works, everyone should come out just fine - although many are initially disappointed. I have seen that disappointment turn into "this was the best thing that happened to me". Good luck everyone - open yourself up to the experience and let it take you where it takes you.

I am so glad that you posted this after last year. Everyone needs to understand that all SEC schools have competitive recruitments but the overall process generally works well. It is important for the PNMs to have an open mind including the Gamma Phi colonization opportunity. All of the chapters at UF are strong! Best of luck to the PNMs and chapters.
#5by: If you were released
If you were released from ALL chapters (and I don't mean "released from all chapters you wanted") there are still options.
In very, very rare cases, there are "snap bids" that can be given out to get a chapter to meet quota, meaning you'd get a call on Bid Day extending a bid to you at a house where you did not pref. Do not bank on this, but it happens.
The better chance is during COB, continuous open bidding. Chapters of all kinds will start having open spots in their new member class as women drop because they can't afford it, decide they don't have time, etc. Panhellenic can provide chapters with a list of interested released PNMs. If a chapter released you during formal recruitment, there's a small chance that if you become friends with other girls in the house that you can get a COB bid.
Finally, there's GPhiB! At UF, the last time there was a colony, it was DZ, and you can see they have a great chapter. Colonies especially need great upperclassmen!
