How helpful is it to know someone in a house? My friend thinks she has an easy in somewhere because she has a good friend in it but I'm not sure how exactly that works. And is it hard to get into houses where you don't know anyone?

Hi! Knowing someone can help keep you past round 1, but you are not going to get a bid based on one member. It can't hurt if you are friends with a sister, but unless she has brought you around a lot and you know most of the chapter already, it won't do too much. Inviting you back is also based on the sisters who you talk to during recruitment, so don't rely heavily on your friend.
Also it is not hard to get into houses where you don't know anyone. Most girls don't know anyone anywhere when they are going through recruitment.

Before rush sometimes girls write comments about people they know going through recruitment and girls they would recommend them talking to in the chapter for an easy conversation because you guys have similar interests. Knowing someone in the chapter is good for when the chapter women are working on their final numbers, because they could speak up and say something positive about you if they think you're honestly a good fit. But I wouldn't say you're guaranteed a bid. Definitely not. It all depends on if the girl rushing you likes you and thinks you'd be a good fit for the sisterhood.

What if we know of a good amount of girls (let's say 10-15) and they would all have positive things to say? Especially if we knew a good number of them for a few years. And we generally are a good fit for the sisterhood otherwise - would we have a slight edge over someone who's otherwise equal, but knows no one/they don't know as well?

It really just depends on the house. In some yes, in others, it may not matter as much

Letters of Recommendation are not necessary but they cannot hurt. The best part about them is it helps chapters better introduce you to themselves through better knowing you already. Sounds creepy, but it really can be helpful to both you and the chapters!

Every chapter at UF has like 200 sisters. Knowing one girl or even ten girls doesn't guarantee you anything. Do your best NOT to go into recruitment thinking you're going to join one specific chapter because you know someone there - it's the best way to be disappointed. Go in with an open mind and consider EVERY chapter that invites you back, and you will almost always get a bid somewhere in our Greek system!

Okay know people does help but it's not a guarantee and not knowing people isn't bad. I went through rush knowing no one in any house and got the house I wanted regardless of not knowing anyone. On the other hand another PNM that I got close with wanted the same house and knew a lot of the girls in it but didn't get a bid. I wouldn't worry about it and just go through rush being yourself. The process is fast and can be hard but it works.
