my rush story

by:

I rushed my freshman year. I didn't know a whole lot about sororities, but I knew I wanted to be in a top one. I had my heart set on a particular top house but come round 3, I only had middle and bottom houses left. I was so distraught that I dropped out of recruitment. I did spring rush that year and didn't get a bid. My freshman year can be described in one word: terrible. When sophomore year came around, I rushed again and on prefs night, I only had one bottom tier left. I knew I didn't want to be in a bottom tier house so I dropped out once again. I became very depressed and developed an eating disorder. It was the worst time of my life. When spring rush happened, I thought I'd give it one more shot before calling it quits. I ended up getting a bid. I was really unsure as to if I should stay, just because the house wasn't "high" enough. Finally I decided to swallow my pride and stick with my house. It was the best decision I ever made. Although sometimes I wish we got a little more respect on campus, I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. I found my best friend, I'm obsessed with my little, I am no longer depressed and at a healthy weight again. I am happy. I just thought I'd share my experience so PNMs can see that it's not all about tiers. Some of you will end up in your first pick house and some of you will cry when you see your schedule and will want to drop out. Please stick with it. You will thank yourself later. Best of luck and I hope you find your home :)

Love this. Everyone wants the top tiers at first because who doesn't want be known as hot? I ended up in a middle one and it's the best thing that has ever happened to me. Real, caring sisters. Nothing against the tops, but you can have the most amazing sorority experience in any sorority so DO NOT DROP! Give it atleast a week in any house that wants you to join them :)

I loved reading about your experience and decided to share mine to give a different perspective. When I went through recruitment I had no rec letters, wore the same outfit for the rounds that were split in two days and kept everything pretty simple. Light makeup, straight hair, simple clothing, the end. I didn't know anything about the 'tier system' and can honestly say, that going through rush I found something to like about each and every house! I'm by no means 'the hottest girl in the room' or anything like that, yet went on to pref three 'top tier chapters' (although, for me it wasn't about that, I just genuinely liked the girls who rushed me at those houses) and ultimately got my first choice. I had weird rush conversations and even accidentally knocked down a composite at one of the houses I preffed at (lol.) I'm not trying to brag or anything like that, but wanted to show that going in with an open mind is key, and that being yourself is important. Don't listen to talk about the tier system or that you have to be super hot or know every sister to have a shot at the houses you like. You'll find your home wherever that may be and make sure to be yourself along the way :) We have 16 (now 17) amazing houses at UF so go in with an open mind and give everyone a chance. PAN LOVE
