tiers?

by:

I am an incoming Freshman going through recruitment. Do the tiers have any relevance beyond looks and what fraternities you hang out with? Is there any consideration of leadership on campus, campus involvement, scholarship, etc? Are tiers only superficial? Thanks.

It's all looks/social calendar.

Tiers are basically college's little extension of high school/the "cool" kids deciding that they're cool simply because it's always been that way. Not backed up by any factual differences, just tradition and illusion. Even the "looks" difference isn't real. Most girls would "look" like they fit in to any one of the sororities. Wherever you end up will be a great sorority, so don't think about the tiers when deciding!

Social calendars are very much a factual difference. Only a bottom tier whiner would write that there's no difference. We all know who the better looking sororities are too, and they're the top ones no matter what you say.

In other words SK =/= ZTA

Better looking =/= better people, Zeta. Obviously.

Go where you find the best people, the best sisters, and your future best friends. Not where appearance is the number one factor to getting in.

our panhellenic women are involved regardless of tier. there are about the same number of girls in each chapter who are involved in everything, in a few clubs, and in nothing. They all work hard to make the UF community better and to work on their own skills! so much pan love

Tiers are NOT only superficial. My biological sister and I are both in different sororities (hers top tier mine middle) and honestly I can say that hers IS better than mine. Her sisters are more involved, hotter blah blah blah, her exec also has stricter standards, has more socials(that people attend). Hers also has a point system for members to be kept responsible for participating in philanthropies, community service, etc and mine doesnt. She loves the competitive environment in her chapter but personally I'm happier being in a more laid back middle tier house. both of us love our chapters and wouldnt want to be anywhere else....regardless of tier. But yeah tiers exist for a reason and lying to pnms about it doesnt help them out

I'm in a lower mid tier sorority and we have very strict standards when it comes to behavior, we also have multiple socials and events a semester that we end up having wait lists for because there were toooo many sisters that wanted to attend and we didn't have enough buses/enough room(don't worry, each time we ended up buying more buses), a point system for philanthropies and community service, a reward system for the girls who attend the most events. Also, we are required to be involved elsewhere on campus and we have sisters in almost every main organization on campus. Also, I personally view my sisters as being hot and gorgeous inside and out, so no. Tiers are nothing more than superficial rankings. There are chill, less involved top tier sororities (DG, anyone?) and very involved and active middle and lower tier sororities. Tiers are superficial and irrelevant.

I'm mid tier and we have the points system, the leaders, and amazing, full-bus socials as well. The only difference between top tiers (honestly) and everybody else is top tiers are more fake, and their sisterhood is less strong. That's an absolute fact, not an opinion. They pick women based largely on appearance, and end up getting a lot of dud sisters. There are amazing women in top tier sororities, of course, but when you bid based on looks you're going to end up with a lower quality pledge class and a weaker sisterhood. Everybody knows this is true.
Also, as evidenced above - they're insufferably arrogant.
If you pay attention to tiers, you should know this in advance. Don't expect to go top tier and have everybody be humble and sweet and kind and sisterly, it just won't happen.

then why do more people end up dropping from lower tier sororities after bid day

Because unfortunately some PNMs are joining for the wrong reasons, and want to be in a "top-tier" sorority for bragging rights and to drink with the "top tier" fraternities? I know a couple women who dropped my sorority because they felt that they "deserved" top tier because they thought they were "too pretty" for mid-tier….they re-rushed and got an even lower house. :p

Whoever uh is... I can already guess which sorority you are in and no you are not middle lower tier, you are bottom tier. And the reason you have a wait list is because you took a ginormous pledge class this year and there are too many girls in your chapter for the budget you have.

Hi. No, not a sigma kappa. My sorority had a PC of 80 or so girls. Our chapter total is actually under quota, and I am in a mid tier sorority. And we aren't under budget, hence why we purchased more buses. We just didn't estimate that 200 girls would want to go on formal.

They drop from top tier and middle tier sororities too...
Also a lot of it is superficial, like they said above.
To be fair though, some top tiers may be fake and superficial but some of them have wonderfully sweet girls in them who love their sisters as much as the girls in lower tiered sororities do.

all the chapters lose members. most top houses lose 2 or 3. mid and lower houses lose a lot more which is why most mid and lower tiers have to go through spring rush to meet their quota

You realize the sororities who did spring rush were ZTA, Theta, AChiO, DZ, and Phi Mu (maybe others but those are the ones I remember), right?
That's 1 top tier, 3 middle tiers, and 1 lower tier. Seems pretty even to me...

Most girls from my chapter who dropped, dropped because of dues. As one of the most expensive houses on campus, you can't just blame it all on the tier system. So you/I can't really speak for other houses either. :)

My roommate and I pledged Sigma Kappa She stayed in while I didn't. I think on bid day we had around 110 girls and I think only like 90-95 stayed... That's like 15-20 girls who dropped. Our other roommate is a KD and they only had like two or three. It seems like the bottom tier had way more people drop.

Everyone is required to have philanthropy events and do DM so pretty much all sororities are involved a good amount on campus, some houses less than others but that's not based on tier ranking bc you have less involved houses in every tier. Scholarship and tiers have no correlation, considering Aephi had the highest gpa on campus and it's usually considered a bottom-tier house. The differences are really in looks and social rotation. When it comes to looks, I can definitely tell the difference between a phi mu and a zeta or a SK and KD, etc.. But once you get to solid middle tier and up, there's really no difference at all in looks between those girls and top tier ones.

im not saying top tiers are better than middle lower just that theyre different. I go to class in my pjs but then my sister wont leave the apt without makeup. every sorority at UF is a good sorority no doubt and ever sorority has socials, philanthropies whatever but you cant deny the top tiers do things on larger scale and care more about appearances and being the most involved. girls in top tiers just care about seeming the best. im proud of being in a middle tier its a lot more chill

By: reality check
by: uh

No offense, but that is literally just wrong.
SK's can't leave the apartment without makeup, there is a whole thread on it.
I agree that they are different, but there are lower and middle tier sororities who are just as, if not more than, involved than top tier sororities. Your sorority may be relax and chill, but that doesn't mean every sorority not in the top tier is relax and not as involved.
My point is, involvement and care for appearances and whatever is not based on tier. Top tiers do not do things on a larger scale, involvement is based solely on each sorority itself, not tier.

If you choose your sisters based on how they look - as a PNM or as an active chapter - it's not going to be as strong of a sisterhood as if you choose them based on how they ACT. Bottom line.

All of the sororities are fantastic! I've met girls in every house who I can get along with. Any time you get a big group of women together, there's going to be people who don't "click," but I've learned so much about getting along with people! I'm proud to be Greek!
