bullying

by:

The entire rush process has been a prime example of bullying. This kind of treatment towards fellow classmates has never been acceptable in any elementary, middle or high school. I can't believe universities let this happen the first week of school or ever for these young girls. Only allowing a select few girls in the sororities and then cutting the rest is horrible. They should only allow as many to sign up as can fit in the sororities. It's really a crime.

There is no pre-determined number of slots in sororities. The number in each new member class each year ("quota") goes up if more women choose to rush and accept the invitations they are offered. Some women may ultimately not receive invitations from any of the chapters at all but this is relatively rare, and most women who start rush but don't get a bid drop out on their own when they don't like the invitations they get. Point being, if 1000 women get to prefs, then quota is roughly 1000/16. If 400 women get to prefs, then quota is 400/16.

Not being invited to join an organization is not the same as being bullied. And not being invited to join the particular sorority/sororities you want us definitely not bullying.

It's unfortunate that many more girls wanted to pledge than were available spaces for them but I wouldn't call it bullying. There's always C.O.B., spring rush and the promise of sororities forming new colonies here. And what if those who signed up first, before your suggested cutoff, weren't good matches for the sororities? That'd leave out potentially great girls who would fit. Chapters could grow to 300 members but that won't happen if Suzy Rushee isn't a match.

You can't cry bullying if something doesn't turn out to your liking. I had a real bullying situation which put a bully in her place, luckily.

My hometown "frenemy" is a REAL bully who used to attack me and other kids. We got along okay until the summer before I pledged. She didn't have the grades to pledge but I did and I got a bid. She harassed me nonstop - while campaigning other sisters to get them to like her. By then I'd had enough. I'd put up with HER craziness for too many years and effectively blocked her bid. She got an open bid - C.O.B. - to another sorority, thankfully. I don't have to deal with her and she wasn't a good fit for my chapter, even though she thought otherwise.

This is an example of weeding out. You don't - and can't - know the stories of each P.N.M. but I bet more than one of them had a bad history with a current sister.\n\n\n\n\n
