rush question

by:

I am starting rush next week. my mom went to UF and was in a sorority and she filled out a form recommending me. I know that the sorority rules require the house to invite me back to at least 2nd round. Does that increase my chances since they might cut a lot of girls after first round? Or, does it not really make any difference?

It depends on the sorority, in some they keep you until a certain round no matter what. But there is a few that will drop you the first round, even if you're a legacy.

That would be rude to drop me when my mom was a member of that sorority. I wonder how the active sisters would feel to know one day their daughter could be dropped. I don't agree and hoping they take me.

First of all this if def the fugging mom, because you type like a 55-year-old and nobody is named "joanie" anymore, ma'am.

Second of all, while many houses may keep her out of courtesy, these aren't the same sisters you had. Why would you want her to be forced into somewhere she wouldn't fit? Why hope for a house you know nothing about? Are they a "top" house and you know your daughter wouldn't make the cut?

I'm all for lifelong-sisterhood and the idea of legacies getting extra consideration, but if you don't know your own house's rules then you clearly aren't involved anymore. And idgaf (whippersnapper lingo) if my daughter was cut, I'd want her sisters to want her, not resent her automatic bid.

No, my name is Joanie. I am 18. It's a family name. Sorry I asked

I know it is sometimes a tradition in certain houses...but form experience, if you are automatically placed in a house that does not really want you ...you will be kind of an outcast....

So would it be better to be polite and take you just because..or better to be "rude" drop you so you end up in a house better suited to you...and who knows, that may just be the house for you

Go thru rush and enjoy the experience. Keep an open mind with every round. I know several girls, including myself, that were dropped from houses they were legacies to at UF. I found the right fit for me. Yay, my mom was sad that her house dropped me but she got over it pretty quick when she met amazing sisters. Now, we each have our own traditions, which when you think about it is pretty cool. Don't let the posters above get you down!

How's your week going? I hope you're sticking with the process and enjoying recruitment! Pick, pref and pledge where YOU feel most at home. You'll end up where you're meant to be!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Going great. I love all of the houses - every single one of them. The house that my mom belonged to was so nice to me. I think I could fit in really to any of the houses. This is so exciting.

I really hope this isn't true because the name Joanie is NOT a run of the mill name. So if you're real we now know you're name and that you're a legacy. It'd be so easy to figure out who you are and that could kill your recruitment.

I am not that dumb. Joanie is my family nickname because its a family name. My grandparents call me Joanie. Thats not the name I go by everyday.

Aw, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the excitement of the week. It sounds like a lot of different sisters are rooting for you on here and that is awesome! <3

And then you have a few weirdos (probably ZTA/KD trying to dirty rush as always) that think that not using your real name online or having a nickname is is somehow "sketchy"

I just wanted to say that even though people on here thought I was sketchy and probably weird I am a real person and real feelings. I quit today after I was left with only 1 party. It is very sad.

Joanie, as an active Alumna Member of the UF sorority ranked #1 for many decades - from founding until recently - I am appalled by the girls who posted heinous, spurious comments in reply to your question. Shame on you girls! Your actions reflect everything we Alumnae want PURGED from National Panhellenic.
I am so very sorry that Rush did not follow your expectations. :-(

Regarding Legacies, I have strong feelings and much personal experience. I was always 100% Pro-Legacy with regard to them receiving an automatic bid. When I had my two daughters (right after college), I was filled with excitement at the thought of sharing the bonds of sisterhood with my precious girls & pinning their badges on each one personally. #Joy #Tears #OnceInALifetimeMemories. However, as time went on, my opinion was radically changed. First, my beloved chapter at UF was suddenly no longer #1 & the culprit was the flood of legacies who came in the post-Millenial years and choked out the wonderful recruits chosen on their own merits and best fit with the group rather than maternal birthright. My sisters and I - and especially my daughters who were nearing high school & dreaming of college - watched our beloved institution slip to #2, #3, then #4. I think it stopped at mid-tier, but by then it made us ill to watch. Something had to be done, & the solution was that Legacies lost their privileges & now all are equal. Sadly, balance wasn't achieved in time for my older daughter, who pledged the current top sorority - one that was quite below mine until the "slip" & I took it hard. But she's happy, the girls are amazing & now the "Legacy Fix" has improved things so my younger daughter can't wait to pledge my sorority & wear my old jersey. Lesson: it all works out for the best. ♡♡♡ 2U
