rushing

by:

So I am still very undecided on whether I should rush a sorority this upcoming fall semester. I went to FSU for my first two years of college. Greek Life there is also a huge deal, but they also have a lot more people who are not a part of the Greek system so I didn't rush. However, I transferred to UF last year. I rushed in the fall of 2012 but dropped on the second day then rushed in the spring and didn't get a bid. I quickly noticed that college really sucks here if you aren't Greek. I am still new to UF and barely have any friends and I feel like the only way to gain friends and network is by going Greek, which is why I really want to rush again this fall. BUT this will be my third time rushing. Also, I'm going to be a senior so I know my chances will be extremely slim. How likely is it for me to get a bid from a decent house for someone in my position? My gpa is not TOO great, but I think I'm an attractive girl and I have participated in a few activities at UF if that helps. I don't have anything against the Greek community, but I know how harsh they are if you are a "GDI."

You should definitely rush if you are still into the idea of being in a sorority! Each house has a certain quota for the amount of freshman sophomore juniors and seniors they should be taking so it is not impossible to get a bid as a senior. Just go into rush being very open minded because every house is at least "decent". I was actually a GDI for awhile before joining my sorority so I know how you feel. Although I had a lot of fun as a GDI, I have had even more fun being in Greek life. It's all what you make of it.

Being a GDI isnt something people in Greek Life look down on like its a disease (at least my sorority doesnt, as far as I know.) Everyone in Greek life is part of a community, every social event or philanthropy you have something in common with the people around you. While if you are a GDI you don't have that same connection with other random people that you meet. Also there are girls who stay active in sororities even when they go to Grad school at UF so if you plan on doing that then its more of an incentive to rush. Rushing in the spring is a lot harder than the fall because there are less houses and fewer girls getting bids because the quota amount is smaller.

Definitely go for it! You still have a chance as a senior. Have fun and meet people during recruitment too in your tent group and whatnot. If it's something you really want to do, then go for it!
