sorority membership costs?
by: gatorHi! I really want to rush next year but I am also on a budget and have to pay for the dues myself so I was wondering the costs for these sororities. Whats the most expensive and least? Basically I just want to know the general amount that each sorority makes you pay. I know there are extra costs for the tshirts and fines and stuff.

The most expensive is Tri Delta at around $3,000 for the first semester. The least expensive is Delta Phi Epsilon and Kappa Alpha Theta which are both in the $1000-$2000 range. All sororities will be the most expensive for the first semester but then drop down a few hundred dollars afterwards.

The two least expensive are actually Gamma Phi Beta (because they don't have a house or meal plan) and Pi Beta Phi. Both are under $1500 for the semester.

I think it is very ignorant you of you to say this because not everyone is as privileged and has tons of daddys money to blow whenever. Should that be a reason to exclude some that want to join greek life?

I surprisingly agree somewhat with "Ok." While I think costs are very important, in reality, Greek life IS elitist and is not run like a charity. The sororities have much more control over selection than PNMs, so it is true, usually there's very little control over picking based on costs. A huge factor of whether you can stay in is based on if you can afford it (either through your own money or scholarships w/in the sorority), if you can't, you really should not rush. That being said, definitely ask about costs, and if you find out you can afford the sorority you want, go for it.
So as "no" asked, "should that be a reason to exclude some that want to join greek life?" Whether money should or shouldn't be reason for exclusion, it most definitely is a reason for exclusion.

If you potentially can't afford some sororities but can afford others, I don't think you should rush. PNMs basically have no control over the selection process, so you can't decide "oh, I'm only going to chose to go back to the ones I can afford." We all know it doesn't work that way. You also have no idea whether you'll fit into the cheaper sororities as well as the others. So you'd want to choose the cheaper one just because it's cheaper?
Greek life is elitist. We are selective organizations and it costs a significant amount of money to become and stay one of us.

There is a difference between actually being elite and being ELITIST...where someone believes they are a part of select group that they have been specially chosen for that excludes others (practically the definition of Greek life). Elitism is usually associated with some snobbery and is not necessarily considered good. Excluding people because they don't have enough money to belong is a classic form of elitism. Again, there is a difference in meaning.

Gamma Phi is currently the cheapest because they don't have a house and when I went to Pi Phi during round 2 the little paper thing said first semester dues were like $1600 then dropped down
