junior rush - got a bid this fall

by: hi

Hey guys! So i want to rush either this spring as a sophomore or next fall as a junior. I got a bid to my first choice sorority during rush this fall, but i couldn't accept it because my parents said it was not financially possible. however, things have changed, but I'm not sure if they will be doing spring rush. if not,i will do fall rush 2017. do you think already having received a bid would put me at an advantage for the chapter, or since i would be a junior would they be more reluctant?
thank you!

Since you did receive a bid during fall recruitment, you are not eligible to receive a bid to any sorority until fall recruitment 2017. You are bound to the chapter you received a bid to for an entire year. What you CAN do is check with that chapter and see if you can possibly join them this spring if they have any openings since you did receive a bid. That is a possibility.

Thanks! Would they have to be participating in spring rush?

Not necessarily. Sometimes houses only have one or two spots open because they fall under total due to graduations, drops, members not coming back from fall etc. A lot of houses in that position won't actively spring rush but will quietly pick up a couple of new members through friends of current sisters etc. That's why it's important to check directly in your situation. Get on their radar in case they might have an opening and will consider letting you join after you dropped them.

Also, make sure you can really pay for it before you accept a bid again if it's given. During formal you took a spot away from someone who would have had that sorority as their first choice. It also would completely suck for the sorority if you abandoned them for finances again after they showed you grace and welcomed you back.

Awesome. I am going to talk directly to the membership chair of the sorority to find out my options! Thank you for all your help. :)

if you could not afford it?

is expensive. Not sure why you rushed. If I were the house that gave you the bid, I would not give you another one, as you were not seriously interested the 1st time. You were given fees in the 2nd round, you should have dropped out.

a bid is good for one full year which is why you cannot rush again until fall of next year. But because they extended a bid to you, and it's valid for a year, you should still be able to join in the spring. I don't know how every chapter handles this but some would allow you to join for spring.
