It's a numbers game. If quota is 80 and each house has 200 women at pref, then if everyone who prefs there puts it first, you have a less than 50% chance. Lots of those women may wind up matching elsewhere, but it's important to be realistic. I wound up in my second choice and grew to love it. I also discovered lots of women who ended up in second choices. It can sting when you first open that bid card but you very quickly find yourself surrounded by hugs and love.
In short: there's a decent chance you'll get your second choice, but it's not the end of the world, and lots of women look back and can't imagine it working out any other way.

Yes, essentially. If you arent high enough on their list even if you rank them first you wont get them, unless you possibly get added as a quota addition.

Okay so the upperclassmen essentially have a better chance of getting their #1 choice?
