reason tiers exist

by:

You want to know the reason why tiers are so important at UF? Its because we are a competitive school. We all had to be the best and work our butts off to get into this school. We always competed with others to get to where we are today. We want ranks in life to prove that we are still the best. Thats why the tiers are so important. We want to always feel that we are the best and that we are on top. Power is a great feeling you know? Its sad but true.

Not trying to be cynical here, and I go to UF too, but this notion that UF is this super tough school/ extremely difficult to get into is ridiculous. We're not even comparable to the IVY leagues or standfords of the world. Try to get into Harvard then come back to me and tell me what a tough school to get into looks like. Are there kids that go to UF that got into Harvard and some tough ivy leagues? Sure, but its a very very small percentage and UF was most likely more affordable for them or they probably would have chose the ivy's. Anyways, the tier system for girls right or wrong good or bad persists on looks and looks alone. When a sorority does rush sure it's competitive, but when you say you want to be the best- you're basically saying we want the most attractive girls, so we can be the prettiest sorority and do stuff with the best frats and prove we're better than the other sororities.

It is a hard school to get into. Not as hard as Ivys (CLEARLY) but it's the hardest school in FL and they don't just let anyone in which seems to be the case for the other Florida public schools. You can compare all day, everyone is proud to be here and be a gator and it's definitely an accomplishment.

Not saying its something you shouldn't be proud of, but the OP said "best", that's why I debated that point. Also, I guess you could say we're technically the hardest in florida although Miami is very comparable. Furthermore, UF from what i heard use to be extremely easy to get into ( 1970's, 1980's). Bascially you'd apply and got in. That's changed obviously, but I'm saying we're not that different than the other FL schools your referencing.

If you were the best you'd be at Harvard not UF. There are exceptions ( kids who go to UF that got into Harvard and the likes) but very very small proportion.

I go here and even I know that UF is not that hard to get into... It might be the most difficult in Florida but there's not much competition and UF admits tons of kids. Let's not get carried away and start acting like we think we're Princeton or something

Tiers exist at every school with greek life. It's because people need a way to be better than someone else, to create social calendars, and have "cliques". It's social organization.

Undeniable that tiers exist, but their actual importance is disputable. If a person in a top house truly thinks that that in and of itself makes them a better person than others, then they are delusional.

I don't think everyone thinks they're inherently better than girls of houses they are ranked higher than, but I do think some do. I think human nature is competitive. Everyone wants to be viewed as "better" or like they are excelling at something, that's why there's competitions. Tiers are like a competition of sorts. People who cares out tiers more=more competitive individuals, hence why top tier sororities tend to have such competitive girls. It's tricky because I don't think most people want to bring anyone else down, but I think most people do want to be seen as good in some regard.

It doesn't mean you're more competitive literally all it means is looks

It is largely based on looks, but there are gorgeous ladies in every sorority. Personally I feel like a lot of the more competitive ones are drawn toward top tier

At the end of the day you still take yourself with you no matter what tier you are in. Nobody is going to think of you differently.

tiers exist because people dwell on them and it makes them feel powerful like you said. tiers also exist because people don't realize they mean absolutely nothing and the MOMENT you alum no one cares that you were in a top house.

tiers also exist because some chapters are obsessed with rankings and constantly trying to one up each other rather than trying to improve their sisterhood, panhellenic connections, involvement, connections with other organizations, make their house the best it can possibly be or maybe just trying to be good people, and instead are hung up on something so superficial.

they exist solely based on trying to be popular. period.
