Sometimes shy people can come off as disinterested. If you feel like you might be giving the wrong impression due to shyness, maybe use that to help break the ice. Let the sorority girl know that it takes you a little while to get used to a situation like this, but that you are glad to be there, etc.

I was the same way going through recruitment last year, and I'm not going to lie to you...it was a struggle. I do feel that it was a disadvantage for me in the first round because I wasn't comfortable at all, but as the days went on it got a lot better and I even feel that it helped my small-talk skills in every day life. My advice to you is just to be confident from the beginning. I was sooo nervous/intimidated before entering some of the "top" houses, and looking back on it just seems silly. The girls you are talking to are people too, and are probably just as nervous!
