Recent talk on here about sorority history got me reading more about some of them. Came across a list showing each one listed from oldest to newest and where they were founded. Thought I'd share in case anyone else likes this kind of stuff too. Some of the southern versus northern roots definitely are reflected in the personalities of some sororitys now:

Alpha Delta Phi Wesleyan Female College 1851
Phi Mu Wesleyan Female College 1852
Pi Beta Phi Monmouth College 1867
Kappa Alpha Theta DePauw University 1870
Kappa Kappa Gamma Monmouth College 1870
Delta Gamma Lewis School 1873
Sigma Kappa Colby College 1874
Gamma Phi Beta Syracuse University 1874
Alpha Chi Omega DePauw University 1885
Delta Delta Delta Boston University 1888
Chi Omega University of Arkansas 1895
Alpha Omicron Pi Barnard College 1897
Kappa Delta Longwood College 1897
Zeta Tau Alpha Longwood College 1898
Delta Zeta Miami University 1902
Alpha Epsilon Phi Barnard College 1909
Delta Phi Epsilon New York University 1917

Alpha Delta Phi is Adpi correct?

By: Question
by: Yes

Yes, it specifies "first secret society for college women", so I guess before sororities were even considered sororities?

By: Yes

Yes, you are right

Good catch on that typo, I just cut and pasted that list and didn't notice it said phi.

The first womens fraternity was Theta, everything before that was a secret society for women. And then the first time the word sorority was used was for Gphi. So this will get confusing during recruitment because you'll hear that ADPi was the first secret society for women, Theta was the first womens fraternity, and GPhi was the first sorority.

If a PNM is being told a sorority is the first, and they are not standing in a blue and white house on the corner, then they are being told a claim based on pure semantics. Every sorority has a rich history, but there is only one that is truly first and they are at the top of this sorority list.

Going through rush I never could understand how all these houses were claiming to be first lol

So basically Adpi was the very first all them all? Theta was the first to call themselves a fraternity? and gphi was first to call themselves a "sorority"?

By: To "also to yes"
by: Basically

Yes, to break it down Adpi was first in existence, theta was first to name themselves a women's frat, then gphi was first to name themselves a sorority

:)
Actually it's:
ADPi first in existence (started as a women's secret society)
Pi Phi first women's fraternity and first to expand
Theta first women's fraternity founded with Greek letters
GPhi first to use the term sorority, but some of the oldest sororitys still offically call themselves a fraternity...does that mean the oldest ones are not sororities? No, they are considered sororities in the modern sense
Kinda funny all the ways folks try to call themselves oldest. And while the history and evolution of women's organizations is very interesting, the meaning of oldest seems pretty definite.
